Advice for FIRE HORNS?

Post by inkyboi » Tue Oct 19, 2004 7:52 am

I'm a big horn fan. I wore a nice pair for the majority of the week this year. HOWEVER, I want FIRE HORNS next year. Imagine a tall pair of horns strapped on and lit at the ends. It will need some sort of system to get fuel to the horns. I saw someone with something similar and I'm trying to figure out how to make them. Maybe a large torch hat a la Red Hot Chili Peppers would suffice.

Any advice? Websites?

had a cool torch rig on his bicycle this year; maybe you could collaborate

(note, I have no connection to bonefire, YMMV, danger of spontaneous combustion or immediate amputation, death by immolation not advised)

Maybe not long lasting enough, but you could always tape 2 fireworks fountains to your head. PS - read previous disclaimer!

Seriously, if you are going to be using gaseous/liquid fuel, you might consider registering it as fire art (and meeting the safety requirements - any restrictions on wearing this in a crowd? In someone's shade structure? On their artcar?)

Another thought - carbide and water combine to make acetylene gas. You could make a miner's lamp that dribbled water onto carbide (producing acetylene) then light the gas as it exits your "horns". The flame is small, but would burn for several hours on a load. No pressurized gasses, no flammable liquids....

safety disclaimer still applies...ymmv

carved magnesium horns would burn pretty, once you got them lit

wear a thick shirt, though, just in case

and maybe some sunglasses, for your friends

Definately saw some at the Fire Arts Festival this summer. Definately seemed finiky to work with and seemed to go out. Actually, these were more fire antlers. Try the main site to see if they still have links to the Fire Arts Fesitval and see if you can figure out which performers wore them. (A troop on stilts.) Or see if the Crucible www.theCrucible.org I believe has the line up.

How about a tight-fitting metal skullcap fitted with two little burners on a y-junction, hooked up to a little butane hobby torch? Little blue flame horns.

thermite is pretty intense stuff.
crazy hot. ours wouldn't light with a sparkler though, it required a torch.

Yeah careful with that stuff. Last time I made just a small batch and ended up picking metal bits out of my face for a week. So umm yes it can explode if you make it right. As for getting it lit. I recommend magnesium strips. (Hey if you've gone throught the trouble of getting the powdered aluminum, magnesium strips should be no problem.).

A reservoir of lamp oil and a wick up the middle of each horn?

OK but back on the actual topic. I think I was looking at the same pictures you were cus the same ideas has been going through my head. One of the many as I start to think about what I'd like to do for next year. So I guess I should thank you for focusing my thoughts on this a little. I think people have a good point in that this is something that will be straped to your head. So high volume propane is probably out due to weight, heat disipation and general safety concerns. Here's an idea though, and this is probably what I'll do if I try the flaming head gear approach for next year. Use butane and store it in the horns. Basically make the horns giant cig lighters (as a plus think of all the possible pickup lines). You can use a refillable canister and probably commercial parts for the most part. Use a small electric actuator to open the value and a piezo ignition system. This way you only have to run some thin wires to the horns instead of fuel lines. Not going to give you the three foot flames sprouting from you head look, but 4-6" flames available on demand should definately get noticed.
When in doubt, push the RED button!

My son was messing around with extending one of those stove lighters that cost about a dollar. A couple of them parted out could make a short controlable flame. It would look great for partys. That is unless you have a need to burn the world down in one shot.
I'm the contraptioneer your mother warned you about.

Robotland had a pretty good idea there.
if one used one of These:

with a T or Y junction between the tank and the burner, or, possibly easier, use Two Pencil Torches, one for each horn. using two would give you long running time, and make setup easier by avoiding the need to build another air-mixer/burner tip. just mount the tank/s on some type of headgear/skullcap/band, then cut between the head and the tank to add in the approriate sized metal tubing to get everything in position. my PAINT skills are too weak to draw this out, so just trust me. some. a little.

depending on the torch, a fair size flame could be possible, nice and stable and blue, and refills are safe and easy as well. and your head could be used for light soldering. the smaller "cig lighter" torched are too hard to take apart for something like this (in my experiences) and a larger bodied torch (a bigger hobby torch) could be an annoying weight.

This thread absolutely validates my desire to participate in Burning Man. Someone says "Hey, I want to strap a couple of blowtorches to my head" and gets a bunch of suggestions on how to do it. Anywhere else someone might try to talk him out of it!

Suggestion for lighting thermite from a safe distance: Glycerine and Permanganate.

I've actually been thinking of making a similar contraption, but with five flame spouts: one for each finger on my right hand. Heat control balanced with concealment is the key problem I'm facing. The horns sound like a cool idea, though. One though I had was adapting the fuel delivery system of a coleman lantern or stove...no refilling, just switch out cannisters. Plus, propane is less finnicky than butane as far as air mixtures.
