LED welding helmet

Post by VultureChow » Sun Apr 21, 2013 12:14 pm

Done. Except for some wire cleanup. Vintage welders helmet with 170 individually addressable rgb LEDs mounted on a hard hat for comfort.

Running on AA batteries. Wanted sound relative capabilities, but am having issues with the mic. Just a few quick programs for now.

Looks awesome, VultureChow!

How heavy is it?
When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

About 4 pounds. With the hard hat, it's surprisingly comfortable, and I can wear it backwards to give my neck a rest. But I will be wearing it around the house to get used to it.

Sounds like the perfect way to greet the Jehovah's witnesses at the door!

Are you going to hook up your helmet to a spectral analyzing chip (or program) so you can light up only certain parts according to the audio frequencies of your voice?

Was your dog cool with it? Or did it evoke canine angst and dog hostility? Just wondering. Some dogs would really be freaked out.
The next morning you will wake up pretty much your old self except that a very unusual 16 hours will have been added to your store of life experience.

My first thought when I saw that video was "that would look really cool coupled with a dalek costume".

After seeing this and Junglesmacks' build, I think I'm gonna have to bite the bullet and learn this shit...

What was total build time (estimated)?

He was totally fine. Nothing phases him. I take him on the roof for 4th of July fireworks and roof party and he takes a nap.

I hadn't thought of it, but I saw some plans for a voice changer, so that would be cool if I could get the mouth to work in time to my robot/alien voice. After all, something had to spark the cargo cult.

Honestly, about two months of intermittent work. But I took the easy way out and bought LED pixel strands from china. So the most tedious part was drilling the holes and housing the wires.

I still had to learn how to use a drill. And to solder. And to do some electronics. The programming I was fine with.

I was totally inspired by Junglesmacks. I wanted something programmable but rigid, so there was less flexing and opportunity for breakage.
