One Item for BMan 2013 a Day
Re: One Item for BM a Day
kaicrown, I wish I was talented like you in drawing instead of dreaming. That's a fine lookin' design.
I'm finally making myself a long vest to replace the one I lost in the dust. (On the way to the M&G). No pattern. Just a concept and plenty of time. Pin it, try it on, snip snip. It will be glorious.
Then I need to sew the tent, make a coat and circus big-top and finish my swag pile. How many days left?

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Hi Crypto, I had this BIG plan. I designed a painting in my head. It was magical and mesmerizing. I contacted The Artery so I could put it up on the outside of Center Camp. The 4' by 8' canvass was an ambitious project for me. I'm no painter and I can't draw but with several months I was determined. I explained to them that the snarky wit and wisdom of these boards is only enjoyed by a very few.
You'll love this..........the theme was 'Eplaya'. My painting was a landscape with a fence running down the middle and reaching far, far into the distance. One side was underwater with fish and such. The other side had bikes and round rocks. Everything was inscribed with quotes from eplaya. The fence was on fire. The smoke spelled 'Eplaya'. There was a hill in the distance with the man, (burning). A double or make that a triple rainbow. Birds and angels singing praises etc....etc....
They were going along with me. Then they told me I had to make it 8' by 8'. I agonized and then bailed. I don't have any area to work on that size and I finally realized I can't draw, paint or depict anything other than stick figures. So if you know any stick people I would be happy to paint them. Now the pressure is off and I can do what I know how. Sew, build, dream.
You have to admit though, It would have been something.

Actually, you can draw. Maybe not enough to do something so ambitious in the time allotted, but you can draw. Start with doodles, stick with it, and find your style.

Antim, I would love for someone to paint or draw any part of what I can only imagine. Crypto, Sure I can draw. I can copy things. I can probably even paint but a weight was lifted when I decided not to do that thing. I'm much happier working in my element.

Or do the piece in sections. 8x8 is just two 4x8s. When we did 40' of mural for our camp last year, we did it in 10' sections. If your design has a fence running down the middle you've already got a natural divider that will help with the process.

I had one try to hijack my mutant vehicle one year... got tazered for the amusement of the tazer-er another time while driving my M/V - let's just say the Captain didn't react well to that... plus a few other incidents. The Rangers aren't going to do anything but watch. The cops are never where you need them. You pretty much have to take care of yourself!

If you're real nice, and ask nicely, maybe TamaraKay will crochet you a pepper-spray belt...
(Okay, I'm not really volunteering Tamara. I just like the idea of a crochet pepper-spray belt...)
And yes, there are dangerous people at burningman. I know of two serial rapists who've gone, and the fact that one is dead and the other is in prison doesn't mean that I think there aren't any more.
I remember one year someone tried to knife someone during the temple burn...

Re: One Item for BM a Day
On the subject of defensive weapons...If you've got a legitimate question about weapons at the event, send a note to [email protected] with details of what you feel you need to bring in order to feel safe. The folks who man that address will route it to the right people.
Speaking personally, the only defensive 'weapon' I'd ever recommend is something designed to temporarily incapacitate someone (like pepper spray) - never something that would cause serious injury (like a dagger). Overall though, I can't say I've ever felt unsafe out there (either in the city itself or out in deep playa) and can't imagine that I'd ever arm myself. I could see a potential need for some (especially if they're involved with conflict resolution or securing big art/vehicles).
