Ygmir, I have heard of bentonite. A clay used as an additive in mortar -- expands a bit. I'll tell him, but this seems to be more uh... fundamental.

Yeah Elliot, bentonite, is very heavy, so sinks to the bottom and seals a lot of seepage.
you can even do it with the pond full, by sprinkling in the water, and agitating (I've seen it done with an outboard motor on a small boat), dumping the clay over the side and running in circles with the boat. the clay settles pretty evenly on the bottom and creates a pretty good seal.
