i know, im being a shit stirrer, but every year, i ask the same question.


is it the event? is it the culture? does camping in the middle of the desert not appeal to certain demographics? i would expect the proportions to be the same as the general population, but it's not.

in the service in the early 70's I was a M.P. my partner was Fred Black ( a black guy ) we had alot of calls that put us in dangerous situations. I would take a bullet to save him for sure.
When we would be off duty and partying and someone would pass a joint around , I would say to him " dont nigger lip it " and he would say " fuck you chief"

After the Army I got back home and my best friend Jose Lopez ,and me went to Portland to learn how to box . We went to the Knott St Boxing club ,and Jose and I were the lightest skinned guys there.
As we got known ,we could pitch the black guys stuff cause both of us were good in the ring . When you make friends with someone different than you those kinda things can happen .

i agree tatonka, it's HOW you say it, how it's intended, who is delivering the word and to whom.

its also up to us to stop letting words hurt us.


on a different tack, i Love AfrikaBurn, love that it's become such a big Regional.

what i find curious though, is that i've looked through HUNDREDS of pictures from AfrikaBurn yet have not seen ONE black face in the crowd..

not one.

Of course it's different when it's with friends. Then you run the risk of forgetting context and doing that with someone who doesn't know you and who would possibly be suspicious of you or anyone else starting off like that.

At the time we all carried .45 and shotguns and many of the black M.P.s were very mean to there own with the name calling .
