Hi guys I'm coming over from the uk and was looking to minimise on space for what I bring food wise

I have been looking around and wondered if any one could help with a place to get a ration pack like the one in the link below but ideally I'm looking to buy it once I touch down in the USA and not have to bring it from the uk

You'll be able to put what food you need in your camper without buying the dehydrated stuff. If it's what you want, google "camping equipment las vegas" or "camping food reno" and see what comes up. REI is going to be in one or the other, if not both. And there will be other stores as well.

I am a lightweight camper for BM. Most people find their appetite severely reduced and crave highly flavored, salty and/or comfort foods.

Coming from Vegas, you might look at the food shopping options in Fernley, NV - that would save a trip into Reno. There are many food threads on ePlaya as well. Enjoy your burn, and bring the inspiration back to the UK, never heard of anybody starving to death at the event.

I always enjoy the comments of Crypto and UJohn. And they are right - there was even a cannibalism thread related to UJohn's comment!

I was speaking metaphorically. Most people, including me in the past, pack anticipated food preparing, and pack half or more of it out unconsumed.

The DPW, the construction and cleanup crew, and local food banks take donations on-Playa of excess food outgoing. They are specific and particular on what though. Thread or link references to that are welcome. In Nevada and all over the country, people really need food donations. If you can help, great!

Hi guys all realy ensitfull answers and cheers for the help I don't plan on eating the stuff for the entire week but I find it handy for them times when your body is crashing and you need a good hit of energey from food intake that's quick and simple.

Try using a site like Yelp.com with "camping supplies" and "Reno" as your key words. (Or a brand name you like, and "Reno"). You'll get reviews, addresses, phone numbers, a map.

Note: Canned food is often cheaper and easier to get hold of than dehydrated specialty food, although I'm sure there are some premium brands that do a good job. But you could do a combination of canned, vaccuum-sealed, dried and fresh at a normal grocery store if you wanted to.

Been practicing cooking with dehydrated food for three four months now.. I'm not having the chinese plague (hung chow). The dried stuff is fruits,vegies,nuts,
seeds,hemp and beans. The gas is enough to make the cat leave the room.

Don't know what us canned food is like but I would sooner eat dried food rather than some of the canned food you get in the uk. Plus the dried stuff keeps you fuller for longer

There is an REI right next to the airport in Reno. There is also a massive sporting goods store in Reno (techncially sparks I think) called Scheels. They should have them.

It's only a week. It should be possible to walk into a store in Reno and walk out able to carry everything you will eat or drink (except water). Two shopping bags is probably more than you'll eat, especially if you have a lot of condensed foods like Clif bars and smoked salmon. One shopping bag full of food, the other full of alcohol. You probably won't want any bread.

Hi everyone,

I guess I'm very different! I cook all my food before leaving home to make sure we have a hot meal every night. I prepare spaghetti, chili, tuna casserole, chicken patties for grilling, taco meat with tortilla. For breakfast, there is nothing like French toast made with Hawaiian sweet bread and ham on the side or an omelet in a bag (13 mins).
Anyway, thanks for sharing the dehydrated food and meals in a can comments. I enjoy learning how others prepare for the week.

I've had a few dehydrated meals that were a lot better than anything you could get in a can. (stuff like scrambled eggs, lasagne, etc) I mostly bring canned food though, so I don't have to worry about cleaning anything, just crush the cans and let the food dry out over the week.

I don't really do dehydrated foods myself so I'm not sure how much water's used, but if you're relying heavily on that kind of food you may want to increase the amount of water you bring to cover it. If you'll be traveling by camper once you arrive, you'll have room/carry capacity for canned goods and other food as well.

I do bulk d-hyd. It's 2 to 1 must of the time. Except for beans with soaking and cooking.. The other veggies, get 'em wet and eat 'em..

I would expect backpacker style freeze dried food to be significantly more expensive. I always thought the point was to carry less weight by counting on water being available where you go. If you have to carry the water anyway, it seems like that's money wasted. I don't know about relative tastiness compared to cans, but I usually do fine with canned soup, chile, etc. for staples.

While this seems to be the consensus, if it's your first time, I wouldn't recommend counting on a reduced appetite. Maybe it's because my camp duties include daily slave physical labor but last year I brought more food than I thought I'd need and was running low the last day, despite being provided delicious camp dinners. I certainly didn't go hungry, but a big, day-long dust storm delaying my return to Reno could potentially have changed that.

I learned that I need to plan more carefully to be self-reliant for food for my entire time in Black Rock City, plus a few extra emergency granola bars and snacks to share.

Mountain House and Backpackers Pantry dehydrated foods are actually quite good. There are several different kinds and they even have ice cream. I could do just fine for a week on just those alone but I will be bringing other fresh stuff as well. My appetite skyrockets out there so I need to bring LOTS more than I would normally eat.

Almost any sport/hiking store have food in a bag . . Just add hot water . . Cost about $10.00 a big meal . . Serves more than one person . . Mount House , in a pouch . .
