Places to shop in SF?
Howdy all,
I'm spending a long weekend in the SF area next week for Maker Faire, and I'll have Monday to kill in the city. I've never been there before, and I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction for thrift shops and stores that cater to burners. It's pretty slim picking for both back at home.
Thanks!

Thrift is pretty thoroughly picked over in the city. Beyond the burner population, there are many hipsters...

The Mission District (Mission Street from 16th Street to 24th and beyond) might be your best bet.

Crptohex - it all depends on what you're looking for, and what you're willing to spend. SF has some great custom clothing stores where people get some of the super-cool things you'll see on the playa, but you're going to pay for them (I've seen custom "pod" style belt for $300+...)
Basic fake fur everything is all over the place - Upper Haight St. (the tourist district everyone thinks of when they hear "Haight Street") is going to be filled with stores carrying basic burner gear, from thrifts stores, a military surplus store, high-end vintage clothing, hippie stuff.... On "Lower Haight"
Like Fishy said, the Mission is the go-to spot for thrift stores, but they are well picked over. So picked over that I'm trying to plan time to thrift-shop in Phoenix when I'm there next month, because they're really hit-or-miss. Thrift Town on Mission & 17th is huge, but mostly bland. You can find some gems there, however (an entire collection of Robin Williams' suits were there one day, for less than an hour). Just down the street on Mission, just past 19th is Mission Thrift. My personal favorite, and a good selection of Burner stuff, including goggles etc. This is one of my favorite stores in the city, but, again, hit or miss.
There is another store not far from Thrift Town on Valencia & 16th that sells clothing by the pound (a sister-store to Mission Thrift). I can't remember the name, as always, hit-or-miss

There's a Good Will type store on Mission and Van Ness. I guarantee you'll find a ton of stuff there. The selection of blingy burner clothes is always surprising. We, (in the Bay Area), are jaded when it comes to 2nd hand stores. The stores want $10 for something great and we have seen it for $2 at a garage sale. Check out the curtains and fabrics there too.
There's another store. I think it's called Scrap? Help me out guys.

I work for the East Bay Depot once a week at the location where they get their goods. They are the ones that gave me all the aluminum walkers that I'm fashioning into a circus tent/frisbee. (It will probably take to the air if I'm not careful.) I love the depot but they don't have clothes in their store.

This place is awesome and fairly close to Maker Faire: http://www.yelp.com/biz/thrift-center-t ... san-carlos
Also, don't forget that Maker Faire ITSELF has a massive craft section, and in past years has dedicated an entire warehouse-like building for people to bring, trade, and modify all sorts of clothing items. You may not need to visit a thrift store at all.
