Well, sure. Film cameras are capable of taking amazing photos out there.

I grudgingly have a digital now because it's easier in some ways, and because I take a lot of pictures, but if my film camera didn't have dust in it, I'd still be using it quite happily.

I just put my good-but-worthless SLR film camra in my BM kit. No better use for it!

film is still much higher density than digital.
even my daughters Canon 5dmkII doesn't have the density of a good 35mm.
yeah, there is the advantage of hundreds of photos digital, no developing needed, and the easy of digital for transfer and edit.
But, don't sell film short!! it'll still be a while until you can get film density in a digital. and especially for enlargement and such, density speaks volumes.

Thanks! Canon 7D with their 17-55mm lens. I'd love to mix up the lenses at Burning Man, but I'm too scared to change lenses and risk playa dust mucking up the camera sensor.

An idea: The world is now awash in film cameras worth nothing, even good SLRs like my Canon EOS Elan. How about pickin gup ten such an dget decent photos without risking hardly a dollar to dust damage? Anybody like this idea?

Well, I also take video at BM with my cameras on the playa, but I also like taking hundreds of pictures, which makes film a PITA. In any case, after last year I'm pretty sure the dust-proofing method I used will work reliably going forward. The camera last year came back with no dust damage at all. I cleaned the front of the filter and the optical viewfinder afterwards and that's it. I just can't change lenses, as the dust proofing method I use involves sticking it in a big 2 gallon ziploc bag and then cutting holes in it where you need to reach the camera, then taping around those holes. So, for instance, I cut a hole for the lens and then tape the hole in the bag carefully around the lens, and do the same for both the optical viewfinder and digital display screen (after sticking a cheap translucent display protector over it). When I need to change battery/CF card, I unzip the ziploc bag, reach in, and do that, then reseal the bag.

Takes a little getting used to working the controls through a thick ziploc bag, but it's very doable.
