I think it's still being self-reliant if you set it up ahead of time and have a backup plan. It's sort of like an artist group having a support camp. Water and fuel delivery keeps the big camps, art, and mutant vehicles going. This isn't a biosphere experiment; water is always being trucked in to keep the roads watered for example.

Must be nice to be so close. Able to drag all your gear a short distance. And then snipe at anyone else who doesnt do it your way. Do you do all your own setup or do you have help? Did you make your tent/hut/yurt/dome or did someone else? How about your stove? Where does your personal "self-reliance" stand compared to the guy who hitch hikes from the bus stop after having flown in from France with nothing but a backpack?

Self reliance isnt an absolute. It has degrees. And yes, one of those is staying home. Feel free to exercise that option.

the last supplies are 125 mile south of Gerlach.. That is not to far to haul all your shit.. There are no large cities between my home and the playa. So I dial back and make room for what I will need.. next thing will be some one having a mobile home hauled out and set up at BM.

I love the playa. And one of the things I love about it is the total over-the-top weirdness that some people bring out there. I love that people get together and do shit so wacky that it's jawdropping. Give out popcorn. And then give dental floss to clean the teeth. Where else on earth would this exist? Frankly, the way I see it is as long as your lack or self reliance doesn't affect other people you can do whatever you damn well please. As long as you have enough water and a bit of food you can survive for the week. You talk about people hitchhiking in from France with nothing but a backpack, most people in that situation have a plan for someone else to have brought supplies for them and if not they shouldn't have traveled all that way to spend a week in a desert.

You shouldn't treat Burning Man any different than another camping trip. Know what you need to survive and bring it. If you can afford to bring more by all means do it, but not everyone can.

which is Exactly what you did in 2011. organised a lift for yourself, each year you get a little more ambitious and do it off your own back
i think a lot of people are forgetting the self reliance part - kickstarter and the like are great but please don't rely on them to make your project work. I notice a lot are open ended so whatever funds they get are given to them, instead of target driven so if they dont get the target then it doesn't happen this makes me think it is simply a way to get more cash
