Quarantine Luggage

Post by Drawingablank » Thu May 30, 2013 9:23 pm

Leaving Reno after the 2012 burn the luggage counter at SW airlines took one look at our dusty post playa luggage and bagged each piece in plastic. I don't fly much and was wondering if this is this a common thing to happen?

Playa Dust is very corrosive, which would be murder on aeroplanes.

I usually manage to keep my 2 checked bags fairly clean somehow, but I got grumped at by Amtrak once, & had to do some fast work with baby wipes. (I'm surprised it helped.)

Their complaint was that other people didn't want dirty luggage, and I've gotta say--I saw their point.

thats happened at least since 2011.. their reason was that it was detrimental to the machinery they use to move it around the airport (all the conveyor systems, i suppose)

considering (if i recall correctly) some 20,000 people fly in to the burn.. im sure it adds up pretty quickly

and before that, on amtrak, the wise staff people who knew what burning man was suggested that baggage be cleaned when we were on the way to the burn as a heads up for our return trip

on the way back, that year.. i was provided a spray bottle of water and a rag by one of the amtrak staff as i waited for the train and i did my best to clean up my stuff..

i always spend a night in a hotel after the burn and i spend a bit of time each year cleaning up my baggage.... mainly for my benefit ... but also, just to be polite.

i dont want to have people cleaning up my dusty mess wherever i go!

(and at some point: im sick of dealing with the dust myself)

It may not be common at all airports, but with something north of 15K people flying into and then out of that airport for Burning Man each year, they've probably developed a lot of routines like that.

When you look out the windows at the Sands in Reno you can see a rectangle of dust in every parking spot that has had burners in it.

Genius took a great picture of dusty footprints across freshly rinsed blacktop at the Sands one year.

Also, the ladies room at Loves in Fernley is trashed annually. Those sinks should not double as showers, and burners should clean up after their skanky selves.

isn't that something? so many "profess" how "Burny" they are and act all pious on playa, then do skanky crap like that, and garbage along the road and such once they leave.

so many people use the word "ironic" incorrectly.

i believe that behavior defines "ironic" pretty damn well

Not all who attend the burn will ever be burners, and leave being a burner behind when they leave the playa.

Last year we stopped at Loves in Fernley on the way in and were stretching our legs when the guy we gave a ride share to flicked his ciggarette butt into the landscaping.

I freaked out and asked him wtf are you creating moop.

He replied that it's not the playa.

I was so pissed that I would have left him there if he hadn't just sprung for 50.00 worth of gas in the truck.

Some folks just will never get it.

In other news, my understanding is that the Burning Man exhibit at the Reno airport will be growing in size. Even outside of the event timeframe, it's considered one of the most popular exhibits they've got going. And not really that secretly, there will be instant messaging capability between the info desk at the Reno airport and Playa Info on the playa.

Never had my bags bagged, but had Homeland Security test the dust for explosive potential, ie the most obvious terrorist EVER!

They knew exactly what the dust was though.

After I wash off the rented RV in front of my house, there remains hallowed ground until the first heavy winter rains...an awesome rectangle of playa dust tattooed in the asphalt...sigh...

On a semi related note - the crochet trash fence still has several distinct areas of playa dust in spite of being through hurricande Sandy, several snow storms, and numerous rain storms. I don't think it will ever come fully clean.
