Brush-in shampoo for greasy scalp?

Post by Torquill » Wed Jun 05, 2013 11:16 am

I'm trying to figure out a good dry material for absorbing the skin oils on my scalp on playa. In previous years I've been fine with just brushing my hair daily (no wash), but some months ago my body decided I was healthy enough that it could start exuding a bunch of the stored toxic crap from my chemical injury in 2000, and it makes for a pretty icky nauseating grease that has made washing my skin/hair/scalp into a medical necessity. *sigh*

So, that said, I have a few options. I'd rather not plan on wet-washing my hair every day or two for several reasons (it's pretty long). I could pick up some no-rinse shampoo, but previous experiments with the No-Rinse brand resulted in kind of stringy oily hair; I think it does better with dirt than oil. So my thought is to do one of the brush-in dry shampoo things that can soak up a bunch of oily crap, then maybe use the no-rinse shampoo or a plain water rinse to finish off.

Has anyone had good luck with a brush-in dry shampoo? Cornmeal? Clay kitty litter? Hell, maybe just a sprinkle of playa dust? It does seem to absorb oil pretty well by itself... I have pretty tough hair and I can restore it once I hit the default world, so that's not a big concern. I just don't want to feel sick while I'm there.

Here is what I would do: Get your hair braided professionally before you go - small braids tight to your scalp. Each day, rinse your scalp with a mixture of water and a little white vinegar. You could use a spray bottle. Pat dry with a clean towel to remove any residual oil.

I have never heard of a chemical injury that would begin excreting toxic goo years later....??????????

I went to major internet retailer and entered "dry shampoo" into the search and saw that Suave makes a $3 dry shampoo that gets 4 out of 5 stars over 168 reviews. That seems like a good place to start for little investment. You can also sort by "best reviewed" or "price low to high" or whatever.

Do a couple of test runs at home, and bring real shampoo/conditioner as a back up.

If you sit in a chair over an evap pond and use a pitcher, scrub up, then rinse slowly--instead of a shower (i.e., wash your hair separately from your body) you won't use gallons of water.

Did my little poo dog with corn starch between baths.. The powder clumps the grease and then can be combed out...

Last week I tried some of that camp shampoo that is supposed to be non rinse.. That was a load of crap.. But having short hair I could rinse with a very wet wash rag..

Yes, the human body will and does store all sorts of toxins and usually won't begin to do the work of sorting taxic crap out from tissues and fluids until the organs responsible for detoxifying are healthy and the the body containing them healthy enough to support the detoxification process.

An unhealthy or nutritionally unsupported body is working hard enough just to survive, it will never get the chance to thrive.

Some people never get healthy enough for their body to detox. Ever. Decades and decades of toxic sludge buildup can and will take its toll.

Kudos to the OP for the detox. Keep it up.

Try at least once to find one of the hair-washing camps. Also not sure if the Dr. Bronners wash tub still makes it to the playa...

Squeezing off a good loaf daily can go a long way towards detoxing the body

First off, the label reads like a horror short-short set in a nursing home.
Also it is for cleaning the scalp, as well as the hair. Dry shampoos are more about the grease in the hair itself. Experiment. See if maybe washing with head and shoulders before hitting the playa postpones the effect for an extra day or two.

I've tried the Tresemme dry shampoos, they make two kinds, at home. I had to wash my hair three times to get that crap out. Definitely test at home first.

Playa dust works better. Seriously.

Think about shaving it all off. Or a buzz cut. I think that would render the issues much less complicated.

Just be sure to use sun screen.
