Making video at Burning Man?
Hello everyone =]
I'm going to Burning Man for the first time this year. I want to shoot 3D video there and I was wondering what precautions you guys have taken (those of you who have shot video there). Specially with regards to the dust.
Thank you '=)

Just do us a favor and please don't post it here when you finish the video.

Well, I'd like to see the video when you're done, at least.
Re: Making video at Burning Man?
I shoot still and video both. Last year I had a Canon 7D and also a backup Nikon point & shoot (that can do hd video too). Here's the video I made last year.bad-and-ugly wrote:Hello everyone =]

The big thing for me is just to dustproof the body of the camera, and though I use a DSLR for video, I can't imagine the precautions would be much different for video.
Basically, I take a huge ziploc bag and stick the camera in it. Then I cut out holes around the lens and anything else that I absolutely must have access to without plastic in between (viewfinders, and that's more or less it, as I can change batteries/CF cards by opening the ziploc bag and reaching in). I use electrical tape to then tape the edges of the holes I've cut in the bag to the camera, and do so very carefully, such that with the lens, the bag is actually taped to the rim of the UV filter I keep on the lens.
Last year was pretty dusty, and my camera survived flawlessly. No playa dust got into it as far as I can tell. Nothing on the sensor, nothing behind the filter/on the lens, nothing in the lens casing itself. It's not ideal as operating the controls through a heavy ziploc bag sucks a bit, but I'll happily trade a little less pleasure in shooting for saving my equipment from being trashed.

I'm giving this a nudge over to the Q&A board, since that's a better fit for questions about preparing for the trip.
There are already a few good answers, and a bit more looking around will probably yield a bunch of additional threads on the subject. Good luck with your project!

Please do me a favor and post whatever the hell you fancy on eplaya, whenever you want. Especially if its your 3D video you shot at Burning Man. It helps dilute the asshole commentary.

Re: Making video at Burning Man?
There are numerous threads on dust and cameras, dust and electronics, dust and computers.
Everything will/may be destroyed. A more clean zone of an RV is very useful for changing media and adjustments. But you will work to keep the dust from building up in the RV. Download computers and drives are susceptible to dust. For viewfinding, you may be working in very bright sun, darkness, very high contrast, UV day and night, with goggles and through your camera dust protection. Some people do bring underwater housings. Also you should be aware that there is some theft at the event, though usually misplaced items, and open stored generators and bikes.
The big challenge is capturing sound. Wind is a problem - get close with mics.
Despite all that, looking forward to your project!

Re: Making video at Burning Man?
It's also worth pointing out that you'll need to fill out and turn in the personal use agreement for video cameras. The form can be found here, download and print and fill it out, then turn it in when you get to BRC. If you were dreaming of something with a commercial purpose, you've already missed the filing deadline for 2013.
I don't have any practical advice for shooting 3D over 2D, and there are plenty of tips posted for general photography and video camera use.
Good luck!

Re: Making video at Burning Man?
I did a really lousy job, putting it in a ziplock and cutting a hole, and it was perfectly fine - APPARENTLY =P My own D80, I didn't even do anything to it... Just took it out and photographed and that's it. But I only shot (photos and video) one day, because I didn't have the energy on the others.
Thank you again for your help =]

Also, remember that this year wasn't dusty.

Re: Making video at Burning Man?
After seeing that it was clearly going to be a much less dusty year, I didn't bother this year either. I just stored it in a ziplock when not in use, and cleaned the outside myself when I got back. No damage to sensor or lens that I can see, but like the above poster says, this was a very clean/dust-free year.bad-and-ugly wrote:I did a really lousy job, putting it in a ziplock and cutting a hole, and it was perfectly fine - APPARENTLY =P My own D80, I didn't even do anything to it...
