Not sure what we did, but the gearing was JUST RIGHT! I kinda liked hanging off the handlebars. Though it's NOT something I could ride hands free, it was extremely comfortable!

Then, if you wish to pursue a veritable university degree in bicycology, there is the late great Sheldon Brown.
Sheldon Brown was a life-long Major Bicycling Enthusiast and Bicycle Technician who assembled an encyclopedic cornucopia of bicycle knowledge on a web site sponsored by his employer Harris Cyclery. After his passing a few years ago the web site is being maintained and even expanded by his colleagues.
It will take you a while to plow thru all his Wondermuss Stuff to find what you think you are looking for, but when it comes to traditional bicycle technology it is a-l-l there.

I was just talking to my sister about a basket for the front of her bike.
For my the back of my trike I found one of those wire linen drawer basket and another only a few inches deep for the lid.
Im a little worried about thestrngth because the wire isnt as thick/strong as a normal trike basket is.
Found some alien fabric to make a liner for it.
