Looking for dance space on the playa

Post by Pkobernick » Tue Jun 18, 2013 12:48 pm

Hello eplaya community, I'm hoping to teach a tango (or other ballroom dances) on the playa this year. I was wondering if anyone is a member of a camp that is doing something similar and has some space planned out that I can use to teach a dance class? Or have someone you can point me to? Much appreciated! Phillip

Watching men who have never done formal dancing is lots of fun because "we" uniformly suck at it at first. At least me and my friends did. The most consistent observation is that even very athletic coordinated nimble men (runners, martial artists, football players, ect.) find dancing to be much harder than they ever suspected.

In addition to some serious classes, why don't you do some sessions in a situation where it is encouraged to heckle the newbie dancer participants, who of course might be drinking and all. Make it a spectator sport :)

Every time I read something like this I get puzzled.

There are 9 square miles of "space" inside the trash fence!

Bring some portable music, pick a spot at random, announce your intentions, and start teaching!

People will flock to you!

Do it anywhere!

Do it everywhere!!!

Have "twilight tango" when the temps are perfect!!!!!!!!!

These encounters are some of the best of the burn. 8)

Do it just before the CORE burns... not too close of course. Picking a spot, any spot, and time sounds like a great plan.

Hi Phillip!

I think that's fabulous! (I would certainly like to learn how to tango.) There will be two threads at the top of the 2013 Art and Performance forum (http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewforum.php?f=321) . . . very soon. They will be called

* Artists Seeking Stages
* Stages Seeking Artists

Check back soon.

Really? I thought those two threads were phased out last year to encourage people to use spark- Great news if we're going to have them back!

And there was a theme camp last year called "Tangoed up in Blues" that did classes in both tango and blues dancing- you might want to see if they are planning to return this year! (I'm +1 for the open playa idea too)

You are correct, those threads are history. The Spark tool appeared to make more connections in a week than those high maintenance threads (they required regular work to keep things from getting spammy and off-topic) did in a year. That, and the threads had almost no effect at all on stopping people from posting bunches of standalone threads.

Hi Pkobernick,

While the entire playa can be considered a great surface to perform or teach, you might like to find a place that is "just right" for Tango :) I am one of the original members of the camp Tango'd Up In Blues and we would be happy to have you dance with us. We are planning to host our camp again this year and, as usual, hoping for placement next to Center Camp. The plans are still being put together for this Burn, however, you (anyone) are always welcome to come dance or we can even work with you to plan a lesson time. We lay down a dance floor surface and aim to have music playing 24 hours each day. We set up a cozy area, to be social, wait for the right song, or sleep until you want to dance again. Last year, we also had refreshing drinks (truly refreshing, not alcoholic), an amazing enclosed tent to escape the heat and dust, and an open mic available for performances. Personally, I dance Tango, but much of the camp dances Blues, or both. We have some new plans to change up the appearance and approach that we are taking. As always, feel free to reach out to me. I can also get you in touch with some of the organizers of our space.

Best wishes,

excess
