Ready to live MY life!

Post by down4glamis » Tue Jun 04, 2013 5:12 pm

When you think everything is peachy and the skies are blue its crazy how things can go upside down and backwards in a moment! Just getting out of a VERY long and what I thought was a great relationship! Engaged, in escrow, wedding dates picked and everything going smoothly; then an abrupt end one evening and a long drawn out 2 weeks have made me realize there is MUCH more life has to offer right?!?!

After living a life with my fiancee, doing fun and wild things, i have more of an opportunity to do things that will cheer me up and get me OUT of my comfort zone! Hopefully Burning Man 2013 will be one of those experiences!

I have been to EAST JESUS and have an idea of the art to expect, but have no idea how to meet people going up from my area (OC/IE), and would like to figure it out. I have read up, joined the mailing list, and joined the OC burners as well, hoping it picks up soon and I can start to meet some new people and get out of my "hell" hole!

Wow, down4glamis! Your head must be spinning. The last two weeks have probably hurt quite a bit, but I suppose it's better to know now than later . . . so you may as well celebrate. Getting ready for a Burn is a great and all-consuming distraction.

Look at the 2013 Theme Camps forum if you want to pursue a camp, and send emails or PMs to camps that inspire you. Tell them what skills you have and why you like them. A proper fit is key. Camps aren't necessary to survival, though. The Survival Guide linked below, on the other hand, is.

You'll have neighbors and meet new people every day at the Burn no matter what you do.

Welcome!

Head spinning?!?! Heck yea! My life... as i knew it just got turned upside down.

If taking a week off of work is not an option, is joining a group still the ideal way to go? This seems like the place to be to meet people that will be heading out, thats why I signed up on the forum. Definitely looking for FUN groups, people close to my age group? and of course... Welcoming!

You don't need to worry too much about people being near your age. The Burn skews slightly young, with the most common Burner age group in any camp is about 25-45. But yeah--as for fun, definitely look for a shared philosophy between yourself and any camp you write to. Many, many camps are fun, but they really vary--and there is no one way to run a camp.

How much of the Burn are you going to attend? I ask because it does make a bit of a difference with regards to joining a camp. Some camps might want a lot of participation, or set-up/tear-down, which you might not be able to do fully if your trip is a shorter one. Others might not care as much--provided you have the camp fee (which can vary wildly from camp to camp). However, if you're coming late in the week, a camp would also need to be willing and able to hold a spot for your camper, and it can be hard to defend empty space on the inner streets.

Camps generally require either a bit of work or a fee or both. Some camps are free, but (accordingly) don't provide you with anything other than social contacts. You can also come solo or with a rideshare, and just participate in events all over town.

I guess really what I need todo is focus on a ticket for now. I've gathered it's definitely going to be some work to find just one, let alone 2 if I can find someone to join me.

I would probably get there Wednesday night, and stay until Sunday, unless that Monday is Labor Day?

Thanks for the input!

That Monday is labor day.

And, you might want to start on other preparations. Right now the number of tickets for sale is a trickle. So, do other stuff. You don't want to get a ticket in August, only to find that you don't have time to prepare.

Thank you guys. It is definitly easier said than done though! Trying to stay busy and figuring things out is my priority. I would love to attend burning man, and joined some groups local to me to start getting an idea about it. Wasnt able to make the OC beach burn, but I will on the next one.

It might not hurt to prepare for her wanting to get back together just as soon as she notices you are having a high time. I'd make it a hard rule that you indeed do go to the burn even if you get back together, and that you go without anybody from your past romantic history including her.

Ive had a lot of people tell me the same thing.

Had a possible really cool chick tell me I'm UN-dateable because my fiancee will end up running back to me in 2 months and she wants nothing to do with it! lol I'm damaged goods!

I want to go, I want to experience BM. I don't mind rolling stag, I'm not going to get laid, but I think if i do go I would need to bring a friend minimum to help with costs, driving, and experience the fun with another close friend.

Judging by the photo you posted of yourself, there's a decent chance, and you might want to be prepared to get laid. If that happens, you might end up ditching your friend anyway, so you might as well join a camp and go stag.

I guess the next thing in line is:

Finding a ticket, a group, and some costumes or something?

You don't need a group and you certainly don't need costumes.

By which I mean, you'll meed all sorts of people and only bring costumes if you do that anyway. Contrary to what they say, we do not have a dress code.

Don't get caught up in all the excitement and send some "goodhearted" soul cash for a ticket...you'll never see the cash again, nor the ticket, ever. Best to deal with folks locally, face-to-face. If you must do it long distance, only use PayPal (don't mark it "personal" or "gift") or an escrow service. STEP is a good program, but I think registration for that is closed...if not closed you'd be so far down the queue and prolly never get the ticket.

You don't need a group...but groups are fun...and they can take the edge off some of the important logistics issues (transportation, food, water, shade)

You don't need costumes...but costumes are fun, too.

Good luck!
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

Costumes are optional. Focus on function and comfort first--warm coat, goggles, work gloves, at least 2 pairs of well-broken-in footwear, and extra socks. A knapsack. Light stuff for day. Warmer for night. Stuff like that. Costumes come second.

But I will admit that I was sad not to have a flamboyant warm coat, my first year. (I happen to be a costume-loving person.) A coat can get nightly wear out there on the playa, so if you want to and can afford to have something costume-y and flashy, having a fun coat is not a bad way to get a lot of bang for your buck.

I have bumped the "Man Clothes" thread to the top of the Clothing & Playawear forum in case it would be useful.

Welcome down4glamis!
Leaving your default world in shambles, for the playa, may be a recipe for disaster or the BEST thing that ever happened in your life. Like clocksnmirrors mentioned..go with no expectations!! Now is the time to clear your head, and the playa can be the perfect place to do it. Getting over the costs of going, will/should seem worthwhile.. once all is said and done. Best of luck!

did you go to the OC burners beach burn? I had a mammoth trip so I did not make it but it sounded like a good time.

Usually when money is exchanged for time, its so that the person leaves lol!
