Look at the 2013 Theme Camps forum if you want to pursue a camp, and send emails or PMs to camps that inspire you. Tell them what skills you have and why you like them. A proper fit is key. Camps aren't necessary to survival, though. The Survival Guide linked below, on the other hand, is.
You'll have neighbors and meet new people every day at the Burn no matter what you do.
Welcome!
Head spinning?!?! Heck yea! My life... as i knew it just got turned upside down.
If taking a week off of work is not an option, is joining a group still the ideal way to go? This seems like the place to be to meet people that will be heading out, thats why I signed up on the forum. Definitely looking for FUN groups, people close to my age group? and of course... Welcoming!
You don't need to worry too much about people being near your age. The Burn skews slightly young, with the most common Burner age group in any camp is about 25-45. But yeah--as for fun, definitely look for a shared philosophy between yourself and any camp you write to. Many, many camps are fun, but they really vary--and there is no one way to run a camp.
How much of the Burn are you going to attend? I ask because it does make a bit of a difference with regards to joining a camp. Some camps might want a lot of participation, or set-up/tear-down, which you might not be able to do fully if your trip is a shorter one. Others might not care as much--provided you have the camp fee (which can vary wildly from camp to camp). However, if you're coming late in the week, a camp would also need to be willing
and able to hold a spot for your camper, and it can be hard to defend empty space on the inner streets.
Camps generally require either a bit of work or a fee or both. Some camps are free, but (accordingly) don't provide you with anything other than social contacts. You can also come solo or with a rideshare, and just participate in events all over town.
