Kiwi burners looking for advice, friends and lodgings

Post by kiwi_burner » Thu Jun 06, 2013 3:38 am

Tena koutou katoa, hello to you all!

We two virgin burners are Georgie and Henry and are making our weary way across the oceans and lands to the United States in little over a month to spend sixty thousand, four hundred and eighty minutes travelling the country and its neighbor to the North, building up to what we expect to be the defining moment of our short lives!

Being Georgie's first foray into the US and my first in many years, we are spending this whole time seeing the country and moving from many places to many others and thus will likely arrive on Playa with nothing but ourselves, our bags and the supplies we need to live out the week. Being on the other side of the world and knowing no others attending (except for a dear friend, also in our shoes who seeks camp also), we have no time to pre-organize a camp, much less the ability to create one with the resources we will have at our disposal. We are therefore reaching out to friends not yet known for advice, recommendations or a room in their camp, anyone who can make our experience a bit easier for us. We are looking for no handouts and wish desperately to contribute in whatever way we can to camps and to bringing happiness and good tidings to all whom we encounter.

A bit about ourselves? Henry is 22 and has lived in the quakey city of Christchurch his whole life, Georgie is 24 and has done the same. He grew up as the child of a New Zealander and an American and worked through school and university and graduated with a degree in international relations in 2012; she is the child of two wonderful kiwis, she went to school, finished and went to Canada where she spent a year experiencing all new things unknown to an 18 year old lass from New Zealand before returning home to complete a degree in political science. Henry loves thinking, walking, reading, snowboarding and Georgie. Georgie loves smiling, philosophizing, yoga, skiing and Henry. They both love the ocean, sharing meals, red wine, foreign language films and the blues.

We can't wait to see all of you beautiful, beautiful people out on playa.

Love, thoughts and dreams

GMM & HAB

That was nicely written, the local grammar Nazis will love you!
Well they would if I had not just flicked every OCD button in their dear little minds.

There are a lot of camps, some are are actively recruiting and some not equally there are some you probably would like and others not:

There is even a how to join a theme camp, which to be absolutely honest, pisses me off because I wanted to write about it and let's face it burning man is all about me!

The rule seems to be that you approach them, express interest and state what you offer - some will reply and some not but I have no doubt you'll find a match if your persist.
My only request is that you close communications with camps that do respond and whom you choose not to camp with because I have a feeling in some cases that excessive 'window shopping' in the past may be a part of the reason that camps do not answer.

Be explicit in what you need - it will be pretty rare that you find a room, more likely a space to pitch a tent and access to shared resources that you will probably share the cost of or work for.

Good luck - read around on the forum and join in!

Oh and I fixed this for you:
We are looking for no handouts and wish desperately to contribute in whatever way we can to camps and to bringing happiness and good hard puss* to all whom we encounter.

Hello and welcome to ePlaya! You guys may care to do some reading. Aside from the mandatory stuff like the first-timer's guide and the survival guide, check out the Theme Camps board. There you'll find a growing list of camps posting their plans, and in many cases posting that they're looking for new members. That will grow exponentially in the coming weeks as placement is announced (in early July). Find a camp that interests you, and reach out to them. You may also want to check out the How To Join A Camp thread, it's got some additional info you might find helpful. Good luck and safe travels, I hope to see you guys out on the playa!

So, write about it. Eplaya is all about saying the same things over and over.

Hi guys! And welcome to an exercise in personal reliance in extreme conditions. Already said that you need to do a LOT of research here...scour the posts about shelter, transportation, food storage, and so on.

I hauled some Kiwis to the playa a few year ago when I saw their request for a ride on the Rideshare board (http://rideshare.burningman.com/ridesha ... -man-2013/)...post something there. They ended up with a sweet ride to the playa and camped with an awesome camp. Bottom line, ya gotta do a lotta work, be very proactive...nothing is going to fall in your lap.
Don't bore your friends with all your troubles. Tell your enemies instead, for they will delight in hearing about them.

It should probably go without saying that I was being silly

Hi Georgie! Hi Henry! :D

There's been plenty of great advice here. I would also say check out the 2013 Share Resources forum, where a number of folks decide to share vehicles (in addition to the rideshare board linked by Dragonpilot).

Welcome!

Hey there, welcome to eplaya!

Then I realized that the Lord doesn't work that way so I stole one and asked Him to forgive me

What other parts of the country do you plan to visit? If I read this correctly, 60,480 minutes means you will be here for 42 days.
