I have a friend and neighbour here from Quebec who's in Berkley for the next month learning english. I think her classes are half-days, and much of the success of her learning hinges on actual english interaction.

Anything we should know about going on in that area that she really shouldn't miss?

What are her interests? Of course, she can start with the International Center--whatsitcalled? But it's part of the Berkeley campus. But San Francisco is a "world class" city, so she can do two things every day and not exhaust it.

Just saying Triken, I got caught with buddies in the tunnel where we wanted to study all night for finals and instead we were all sent home
we were not even doing anything ..too young then

I am heading to Philadelphia Friday morning, moving Puppy out of a rental house on Sunday, driving back to DC in the afternoon. The weekend will be spent cleaning. :? I am sure I will be drowning my sorrow over missing the Hof Party in a bucket of soapy water. Puppy says most of the trash has been shoveled out of the (wet) basement and the "back yard," but, we'll see!!!

Her classes are on the Berkeley Campus and she's staying with "an artist family" in a "quarter where the vegetation is very abundant".

I'd have to say that what I know of her interests, they'd definitely include cooking and trying different foods -- she's an absolutely phenomenal cook and likes to put things together differently, travelling and learning about different cultures, second-hand and ecclectic shopping and doing things that are good for her soul.

We did alot of googling before she left and found the immediate area to have a wealth of interesting things to do.... ...but I happen to believe that the really great stuff is usually not found in a google search. That said, it sounds like her host family is a most excellent match and is likely to be able to steer her where she needs to go.

Her last message -- in english, no less -- positively exuded excitement.

I'm waiting to hear what her itinerary is after her classes end, as I'm not quite clear on how much "free travel" time she has before her return. I do know that her house is rented out for the summer.

(And yes, of course I suggested that she couldn't be that close to Burningman and not go, but it may have been too much, too late, with too few resources)

Beautiful!!! I'll be in touch with you this weekend via PM. As I said earlier, I'm not really sure what her itinerary is yet, but hopefully she can get a wee taste of your kind of awesome as well.

Okay, first thing is to find out what, if any, kind of reservations she can make at Chez Panisse. It just reopened this week, so I'm betting that it's going to be hard. (And even before the fire you made reservations months in advance.) Also, look into Cafe Fanny.
However, the Gourmet Ghetto is much, much broader. Extensive exploration is probably mandated. Farmer's markets, including the Ferry Building, should be visited as well. (Would she care to know which farmer's market is patronized by Michael Pollen? We can do that.) Eric might be able to name must try San Francisco restaurants.
Multiple Chinatowns. There's an Indian (subcontinent) section of Berkeley, with more in Hayward. Way out in San Francisco, is where a number of white Russians settled after the revolution, and there are still traces--including an Orthodox church and a couple of delis.
The thrift stores in the inner bay area are pretty picked over by hipsters and their ilk, but there's always the Depot for Creative Reuse for "eclectic". If she can get to Sacramento or elsewhere in the valley, the thrift may improve.
There's more, but not right now.

That's just such a rich list I'm not even going to try to send it to her any other way but to copy it all directly.

Blown away.

Thank You!!!

now I am bragging

Post by MyDearFriend » Sun Mar 02, 2014 10:40 pm

Took a little interweb necromancy but I found this thread just so I could brag.

First though I have to apologize to TK since I won't be out her way early in this year, to see her; maybe October? *hoping*

Hahahahaha, now to the bragging: I am flying to California in May to go camping with Elorrum; she has promised to show me what redwoods look like. 8) And, of course I will manage to weasel my way into her workshop and see all her cool stuff. 8)

But, it gets better: we have wangled an invitation to visit Ygmir, and see his cool stuff!

And, and, get this: I just got us invited to stop in at Elliot's, a few days before the next Grand Kinetic Sculpture Race :!: to get a look at his work in progress too!!!!

I am really hitting the Triple Crown this trip! 8) 8) 8)

Not to mention, a rendezvous with the inimitable Cryptofishist 8) possibly at Muir Woods, to which I have invited a certain wonderful man who has not yet responded to my PM...

Oh the suspense! I am SO excited about this trip. 8) 8) 8)

So, be warned, you folks out there, I will be invading your area May 17-24. Big Basin, Muir, Fort Bragg, Humboldt, Clearlake, Grass Valley, Donner Summit and (hope!) Reno; Yosemite. In that order. Redwoods, rocks, and three brilliant creative spaces, 1100 miles in 7 days. Catch me where you can. 8)
