Remember your birgin campsite?
How did your site selection work out, if you weren't with an established camp?
Any regrets you vowed to NEVER make again in subsequent years?

Re: Remember your birgin campsite?
First year we camped at 5:30+G. Didn't realize kidsville was nearby, and it was pretty quiet. It was nice to have quiet mornings, but it wasn't very lively during the day. We did have awesome neighbors and the porta potties were a block away so it wasn't too bad

9:40 and I. My first impression was that it is never ever quiet. This was in 2010 when the loud mv could slowly cruise the back streets as loud as they wanted and anytime they wanted...
First year camped with just my kids (early 20s). Had great neighbors and being close to 10 was kind of easy

I was at 8:45 and Mars (which would be C now).
Loved it! Have always favored the western side, since.

8:30 ish and K (the outermost street), I love this neighborhood. Several burns later, still rocking the same hood. Outer road somewhere between 8 and 9.
Sooner or later, it will get real strange...

West Side, high on the clock, outer streets. I was not part of an established camp, just a loose knit group in which I knew only 1 other person (a co-worker). I'll have to check my notes because I've been thinking 8:45 & G for years, but today I'm like "Was it 9:45?"
The event was at a population of 18,000-20,000 people or so, so there was--at that place on the clock--no one camped between me and the horizon. Beautiful!
(These days, there would be people in the way of the horizon--on G street anyway).
I've been a West End Girl ever since . . . a dusty salmon swimming upstream to pitch a tent.

Re: Remember your birgin campsite?
I started in 2000 at 9:00 on the outpost circle, with about 10 friends forming a bike repair shop that stayed there (except for moving to the Esplanade, but still at 9:00) for about 5 years. I've been all over the map since, but never back to the 9:00 "old 'hood". Now I'm at the exact opposite, at the 3:00 outpost circle.
I remember 9:00 toward the Esplanade being a loud place at night.

It was! (Is.) And I think 10:00 and Esplanade was where Illuminaughty might've been--my first rave. It was great. I was stone cold sober dancing with silk flags and and met another girl who was sober, and we bonded over it.Captain Goddammit wrote:I started at 9:00 on the outpost circle, with about 10 friends forming a bike repair shop that stayed there (except for moving to the Esplanade, but still at 9:00) for about 5 years. You know, I didn't meet a Pinky until 2003. But that was Pinky of Pink Mammoth--I think. I don't remember where it was, besides "West".Captain Goddammit wrote:I think you're right, and wasn't Pinky's around there somewhere? Wow... remember Pinky's? I heart Pink Mammoth.

Rythm Society with the bliss abyss in 2001 - I didn't even know the streets had identifiers and just used the art to navigate.

2011, 7:30 & J, down the street from the gay camp that had the "come out of the closet" door that you could step thru. Why can't I remember the name... It was clever...
We found our spot at 4am after driving thru the night from SLC and waiting 4 hours in line. We drove the streets with flashlights to see the street signs. We finished building our basic camp just after sunrise, then never went to sleep. We had fun

4:30 & D'ish...RV load of 10 right next door to Damn Fuckin' Texans...where I spent all my time to get away from the RV load of the clueless...(OK, I was clueless, too, but at least I had serious backcountry camping skills)...

5:30-ish and F. Dont remember what it was officially called then. Kind of quiet late at night, good foot traffic with lots of fun explorers during the day. Slept under a folding picnic table the first night and woke up to coffee dripping on my armpit from a cracked mug set above me.
Its been 13-something years and that sleeping bag still smells faintly of coffee.

Re: Remember your birgin campsite?
That was Feet Street! I remember 2000... it was easy that year, the streets were body parts working their way from Brain down to Feet
The Esplanade was called "Head Way" back then.

3:30 and J. Still there, 1 1/2 blocks from the JOTS, unobstructed view of the "hills", and get to see the airport activity. Medium quiet, nice mix. I tend to be a creature of habit, I find what I like and keep doing it. (for example: I love to fish the Pacific side of Costa Rica. Made over 65 tips there. My Father was a big traveler, but he didn't like my way of travelling. He always said go somewhere that you have never gone before. I am the opposite, find something that makes you happy and keep doing it til it doesn't make you happy anymore). end rant.

2006 9:00 Porthole. I went solo & camped with the gypse witches ( whom I'd never met ) the back of my VW bus was right on Plaza.
The party never ended & I was awoken many times by music & explosions. Loved it that year, but I prefer the burbs now.
