Why can't I bring that food to the playa?

Hey how about a fresh salad. Or a great veggie sandwich. Or a glass of milk..

All this work and brain beating to bring food that wont spoil...

Well the first few days at TTITD you can have any thing you bring to a picnic in the park..All those goodies you like so much will not spoil in a good cooler for three or four day.. If you bring them you don't tier as fast with beans a grits..

After gut bombing on the fresh stuff you turn to "all that brain beating" dry food you come up with..

Why not three to four day of happy eating and only four to five day of desert food..

I don't feel like I've eaten unless I have a glass of ice cold milk.

It starts out as 2 of my ice blocks, and by labor day I still have about a quart ready to drink.

I also have to have a cold glass of milk after a meal or it just doesn't feel right. I didn't know you could freeze milk and it would be good again when thawed.

2 gallon sized milk ice blocks would be great in my dry cold ice chest.

Drink about a quarter of the milk out of each jug for expantion, then freeze.

The trick is to completely thaw the milk and then shake it up and it will be good as new.

Then of course you must bring some cookies or chocolate cake!

I've gotten used to powdered milk. really. I put cereal in a baggie, pour in a generous shot of powdered milk. Add cold water when ready to eat. I am happy with it. It took a lot of camping, and a spell with a wonky refrigerator. Nice in coffee too. I don't think I'd have it as a beverage though.

I'll have cold milk and ice cream on burn night! It's only difficult if you have to fly in. I think I'd drive even if I lived in the east.

There's also evaporated milk, which is pretty tasty at least in tea. As a kid I tried to rehydrate some and it wasn't as good as I thought it'd be. I probably used too much water.

Combine something that tastes terrible with precocious depression over the indignities of flirting with the poverty line, and the end result is a lifelong hatred.

They sell real, organic, shelf-stable milk in boxes these days (they're a little larger than juice boxes; often times in the same aisle). It's tastiest chilled in the cooler, but you don't HAVE to refrigerate it all. Like Fishy, I have not been able to find the nice, cheap (non-organic) Trader Joe's version lately, but Kroger, QF, Fred Meyer and Safeway (i.e. major grocery stores) usually have the organic variety (Horizon Farms, 2%). Wait for a sale and get it for $1/serving, which is enough for a bowl of cereal, plus possibly a bit leftover for coffee or tea.

Chocolate milk is also decent for hydration.

I'm not worried about finding it in my neck of the woods, because it's reliably available (and I prefer the organic anyway) but the TJ's variety was a little cheaper per 4 boxes. Same with their canned mocha/espresso. I bought 3 four-packs of Trader Joe's canned coffee last year but they don't have it right now at my local store, and I'd like to finish my shopping soon, so I will probably have to buy a more prominent brand at a regular grocery. Oh, well. It'll be probably a dollar more per 4-pack, but it's not the end of the world.

I do take a long time to shop though, in general, as I'm a relentless penny-pincher . . . in most respects.

I know my mother hates oranges because of having to eat them every day as a child in a family flirting the poverty line. It's a shame to have things ruined like that as a child... though I'd probably have a love of powdered milk ruined than oranges. Other older family members in the way-extended family can't even look at sweet potatoes because that's all they could eat during wartime.

That's a good idea! I had forgotten about that shelf-stable milk that doesn't need refrigeration. I'm not sure how it compares to the organic stuff, but some types that don't need refrigeration is called Ultra High Temperature (UHT) milk, where it effectively has everything living in it killed off. That probably doesn't preclude organically produced milk, but the organic stuff supposedly doesn't need as much processing to kill off some of the other stuff put in the non-organic milk. Note that UHT milk products usually have less flavor than others, but out on the playa it may not make a huge difference. If you're passing through Logan, Utah, Gossner's Foods, Inc. produces UHT milk; it might be sold around the area or in other cities in the region.

On a similar note, Costco sells this "ultrapasteurized" Darigold half-and-half that I've been using for coffee. I do keep it refrigerated but it lasts forever. Even if it didn't it is so cheap that I could dump half of it and still be ahead of buying other brands. The current half-gallon container I'm using has a expiration date of 5/29/2013 on it, but I'm still using it because every time I take a whiff of the product it still smells good (as in no scent at all). Use your nose! Something like that may last substantially longer than other milk products in less-than-idea conditions.

Last year I brought 4 quart boxes of UHT (Ultra High Temp) 2% milk. No need to cool or freeze until you open a box. Tastes just as good (or better) than fresh. Get it at Albertson's

The playa is wilderness as Mr Unjonharley calls out. See if the Black Rock Farmers Market is there. I cooked in a medium size camp. We had box trucks and ice, but some things were wilty after mid week. Fresh fruits and vegetables like controlled temp and humidity. Different for different items. Think about your refrig at home. What keeps how long in a bag or not. Fresh is difficult but possible at BM.
