55 gallon rain barrels (white) broke down after five year around years.. Getting wooden replacements from a winery.. Go's better with the house..oh! the five gallon collapsible bladder has lasted 5 + years. Kept inside van/building..Canoe wrote:Looking around the web, there are multiple reports that any of the plastic water containers (suitcase, box, jerrycan, etc.), even the very expensive ones, soft shell or rigid, will weaken and seams split or become brittle and fracture, once they have sufficient exposure to the sun, particularly that of Arizona, New Mexico and Nevada. Fortunately for BRC purposes, the time frames reported are where people are storing them outside under the sun, be it for a whole season or more typically year round.Savannah wrote:...I do not stack them or let them sit in the sun; that might help.
So yes, not in the sun, to maximize their reliability and life.

Would gifting leftover water to DPW and Playa Restoration be an option?
Excuse me Ma'am, your going to feel a small prick.

I have seen them turn away water in recent years. It might be a safety thing. They take many other (sealed, non-perishable) things: food, alcohol, tampons.Sail Man wrote:Would gifting leftover water to DPW and Playa Restoration be an option?

If DPW, etc., already have enough, then if they accepted more then they would be stuck with it at the end, transporting it and its containers off the playa.
It will depend on what and if they need at the time you ask. Which means, on-playa.
There's usually enough camps with extra water available. On-playa, you can always drop by the radio station and have them offer it up over the air. One year, on whim I turned the radio on in time to hear a plea for water. Had the camp drop by to pickup some spare cases of bottled water.
The radio stations may be accommodating of doing that for any resource. We don't always find those in need in person. Or write a sign on cardboard: "we have spare ______". You could even leave some out on a table by your road with a sign.
