I build cars.
Cap'n G., we need to talk cars. Im a tried n true GM guy. I have a 64 SS 409 Impala, and a 62 rag Impala. Both are frame off restorations, and I do all my own work.
Currently I am building a 53 Buick Roadmaster convertible. It started life as a two door coupe, but by grafting the parts off a badly rusted ragtop, it was turned into a drop top. There is no way to tell the car is a conversion. Id download a picture, but it keeps telling me the file is too big.

Ranger, yes we do need to talk cars! A buddy and I just did the exact same thing, starting with a junk but rare '57 Cadillac Eldorado hardtop, using parts from a '57 DeVille convertible to make it into a frame-off show car '57 Eldorado convertible.

Photography is what I do most, jewelry is what I love to do, it's just very time-consuming. There's just something fulfilling about having a vaguely legitimate reason to have a blowtorch in your living-room...
I have also made old looking beads and fooled a collector with them

Other hobbies? I mostly try to fill the empty hole in my life...
...and seeing these kickass cars and bikes and toys sure ain't helping Me feel more fulfilled, folks.
Is envy a hobby? I know coveting is a sin, so maybe envy would fit within that cherished pasttime, which is more of a habit with me than a hobby. My therapist said I was obsessive; I enjoy that and spend alot of free time so engaged, but is that a hobby? I'll have to think about that some more. I also hike, and camp in the Sierras and the Southwest, go to musical shows, stalk female guitar players, write angry letters, and foster kittens with the SPCA.

Let me elaborate about those kick-ass cars a little then... I'll start out by saying I have WAY more fun with my Burning Man mutant vehicle than with any "default world" cars.Lonesomebri wrote:Other hobbies? I mostly try to fill the empty hole in my life...

That Cadillac Eldorado was a SHITLOAD of work, long evenings and weekends at the shop slaving away on major things like grafting the convertible body section into it, down to endless hours of hammer-&-dolly, filing, sanding, then buffing a million stainless trim parts until they looked new. Now that it's done, it rides in a trailer to shows.
The grey and white '55 Chevy has been my hot rod for 25 years... I got it when I was like 22, when it wasn't yet an expensive car. It pretty much sits in the garage and gets driven a few times a year. You can't really go anywhere and park it and leave it. I'd have sold it if I hadn't always wanted a '55 Bel Air since I was about 5.
Cars like those aren't "cars'. You can't just use them like a Toyota Camry, without destroying them. They're kind of a pain in the ass. All you do is worry about them.
That was one of the big things that drew me to Burning Man. Here was a place where you could drive anything you wanted to build, and NOT worry about minute scratches or rock chips... you could build shit to go have FUN on. Spill drinks on it. Dance on it. Cruise the shit out of it.
Don't waste any time coveting show cars... the truth is they aren't that much fun, you don't really drive them, and car shows are pretty boring. And I'm a born gear-head saying that.

I use to bow hunt , havnt been in 10+ years . Last elk I got is a good story , was hunting the winter hunt , all the elk come down out of the hills and get by the river to get out of the snow.Drawingablank wrote:My hobbies: making beer, drinkng beer, Bow hunting, non bow hunting, creating art - current interests are wood sculpting, block printing, and hot glass work.
I would ride my bike to the end of a old logging road and go from there. I went about two miles in and the rode was washed out by a winter roaring stream. I looked up hill and there was a elk
grazing about 50 yards away. The roar of the water had drowned out my Mc noise. I parked the bike and put my bow together ( 155lb takedown recurve ) . I was next to the stream and the cut bank
would hide my view as I got closer. It was raining and getting close to 3:30 in the afternoon. I got to within 30 yards and leaned back from the bank and could see the elk , I fired and my arrow went
right under the belly and made a small noise as it hit the hill side. My feathers on the arrow got wet and weighted the flight down and It come up short. I only carry 2 arrows so I shook the water
from my last one and looked over bank. The elk had looked around and went back to eating, I aimed again and hit right in the heart lung zone. I threw myself against the bank and thought Ill wait 20min
and track her.
I then heard a noise and looked up and saw the elk on the bank just above my head. It wobbled and started to fall right at me, I again slammed myself against the bank and the elk just missed me and died at my feet. Was right next to the water so it was easy to clean.

The 409 is a rare enough car that driving it is scary. Yea its not in the top 5 or so cars to have, but its a matching numbers low mileage car. I spent many hours refinishing the original nuts and bolts, as many of them are no longer available. Au-Ve-Co still makes the indexed head and captured washer bolts, but some of the grade 5 stuff with the correct stampings cant be found.
The 62 rag is another story. Its a lowrider, and everything in, on, and under it is chrome. Literally every metal piece except for the body and frame are chrome. For every hour it is driven, I spend 8 hours cleaning it. I have no idea why I did this...
The buick is a lot like the caddy you built. (fucking awesome btw. Reminds me of the cadzilla ZZ Top has). Its not my car; i am building it for a client. Its cool, because its a hobby I can make money doing. I should be done by the end of the year. An 18 month build time isnt too bad, considering all the other shit I have to do.
Tomorrow I am going to check out a 1933 Franklin that a guy wants built. This will be challenging, as there are few, if any parts available.
Pm me and lets swap contact info

That one scene of them kittens battin that wadded up aluminum foil is priceless. You can blow several dollars on toys for them and they're not interested but drop anything on the floor and it's the best thing since Ben Hur discovered axle grease. For my cats it's usually blue milk container caps.

Oh jesus... thanks a fuckin' lot! Lol... I don't need another reason to be nervous about the ocean! We rented a condo on Fort Walton beach on the Gulf last Memorial day. We were out swimming in the crystal clear water all day and into the night. We woke up the next morning for breakfast and looked out the window to see an 8 foot shark swimming 60 yards off the beach. Damn sea monsters!tatonka wrote:I havnt been in the ocean since 1974 , was in florida and went swimming at mid night. I'm slowly getting into wood/metal work for burn projects. Did woodworking in high school and loved it. I did a 6' ruben's tube in a custom box for our local Atlanta burn a month ago. Now that I'm moving to SF, I'll need a new sensei with a shop that I can study under.... or I'll have to get a membership to one of those builder shops... though they're freakin pricey!

Re: whats your other hobbies?
Primarily reading and music, lots of music, live mostly, I average 1 1/2 concerts a week in the summer months. Pretty much all genres but heavy on rock and blues. I also d/l a lot of live shows (legally) and buy a fair amount to keep the iPod cranking and to listen to when I'm not at shows. People think it's odd that I go by myself but I don't care, the lady doesn't care for crowds, nor loud music and I've always been pretty much a loner anyway. With what I have on HD ready to transfer I've reached capacity on my 80gb iPod so it's time to purge.
I also never saw the purpose in destroying what nature (or whatever imaginary being you chose to conjure up to give meaning) has provided us if not for my own survival. No judgement, just my feeling I'd rather do something constructive hence, my helping Mrs Sic Pup with her animal rescue efforts. It started because my idiotic neighbor feeds strays willy nilly, when the situation got out of hand we began capturing them and spaying/neutering. The situation is stable now and the population is dwindling. Along the way we've acquired 4 kittens that were being tormented by bullies who once feral are now socialized more or less and as soon as Sic Pup goes they will join our other 3 cat with free reign of the house. We also have 3 kittens that more or less have taken over the garage. The Mrs volunteers with a group that puts cages in pet stores and does a lot of work with placing them into good homes and has been active in several feral communities, I tag along.
Although, I support her and help her with her passion I've yet to turn vegan as she and my daughter have. I eat mostly vegan at home, was a primary force in getting more vegan options at work (where I've become the quasi resident expert) and was instrumental in building what started as a 5 vegan meet up to what has now ballooned to over 50 at last count. Yesterday was my last day at that kitchen and my boss got a vegan sheet cake for me (huh?) so I took a chunk of it home for the girls.
I may just go the Bittman route and do VB6...I know, I know, it's like being a little pregnant but there's something to be said for moderation, not denying oneself and moving in a positive direction.
But my passion is food and cooking and respecting what provides sustenance.
Oh, and sex but that's a given.
How to you tell if there's a vegan in the room?
They'll tell you.

*Sigh* I confess to being a female gear head. For me, life is best with cars, horses, Burning Man related stuff, and cooking. Except for the cooking part, I guess I could be easily described as a serious tomboy. My particular car passions are generally rooted in old british sports cars but I love to follow both modern supercars and other antiques (not very knowledgeable but love the classic french cars of the art deco era). I can certainly have my head turned by good American custom restorations and that Caddy is rad! Have been VP of our local Jaguar club for almost 10 years now. Yes, I own Jags but I drive a Masda Miata and a Toyota 4Runner - 'cause I like actually getting where I'm going.
