Have 10x14 Kodiak tent, do I need a shade over it?

The RDS they used to be able to get was the double layer silver and black that I've been looking for.

If you want to upgrade to the 80% aluminet, they can upgrade to that for $14 on your order.
The 80% isn't on the website, but is available.

Springbar currently are producing their Scout line, which are cheaper and use a cheaper canvas on the sides.
450 for a 10 x 14, 400 for the small one.
They only make them when they have the canvas available.

I used billboard vinyl to wrap, and it made all the difference in comfort, even blocking indirect light on the sides, which was crucial.
Cool till noon, tolerable till two.

I just asked springbar about dying their canvas, and they said it is possible to find a compatible technique.
Darker is cooler.

Canvas is going to work great with a swamp cooler, of course.
I didn't need one with enough shade.

Wrapped it as completely as possible.
I had an air gap where possible.
Had a raised bar over the center of the tent to stretch across.
Heavy white on top.
I'm not sure what the other piece was, but more opaque.
I thought it was all opaque, until I tried to block the sun.
I might try some of shelsys opaque tarps, if I can't get something superior.
Silvicool is solid reflective material out of canadia.

Depends on the temps this year, but it helped tremendously.
I'd say that was an average year.

If you get double layer, put the reflective layer on the outside.
The purpose of a darker layer or tent is to block the heat.
A black layer will also release heat easier too, but reflective is good when you can do it.
I'm sure the white layer helped some, but no way to compare.

I've been in tents that were deadly in ten minutes in the sun.

Be aware that this also stops the sun heating the tent up before nightfall too, so little help from that at night.

I was thinking, get one long one to go over the sides and top, then a shorter one to go over the back (leaving the front door free). Given enough sturdy stakes and guy lines to anchor it to the ground and the tent, does that setup sound OK wind-wise?

Yes.
The important thing in wind is to prevent flapping.
Ropes or bungees tied around any loose material can help control that.
I had long enough material to stretch it out at the bottom and staked it down directly.
Cover and tent would have self destructed without controlling the flapping.
That's why the springbars work.

Like I said the greenhouse guys can obtain 80% mesh aluminet.
They sent me a sample of the mesh up to 70%.
They also sent me a sample of the DS or RDS aluminet.
Totally opaque!
Love it!

Woven, which I didn't quite expect, but solid.
It is not the same as the solid silver I have seen before.

I stretched out the material over the door leaving an awkward alcove, but shading the tent as far as possible.
I don't have an easy solution there, without tailoring one.

Hello everyone - been going through various threads trying to come up with the best solution for what we are trying to do. My camp has two Kodiak tents. One 9x8 with swamp cooler(ours) and one 10x14(friends). My boyfriend and I would like to take on the construction/funds to make a shade structure that could cover both of these tents. We have reviewed monkey huts, and we have reviewed galaxy huts. Have thought about trying to track down one of those Costco car ports but that would be a tight squeeze for the bigger tent. Has anyone had to resolve a two large tent issue before. I have not seen much feedback on galaxy huts. My one concern about the galaxy hut is for transportation reasons I would need to cut the 10ft poles in half( we have a little Kia) to get them out to playa then I would need to make the sleeve connectors I have read about on the monkey huts. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Hoping to get the supplies this weekend:) thank ou all

I think trying to cover two tents may be harder than separate shade, but nice if it works.
