from LA to Reno
from LA to Reno
Hello I was thinking of driving from LA to Reno via hwy 395, instead of hwy 5, just wondering if this is a better way sightseeing wise?

Re: from LA to Reno
Yes, definitely. I actually skip reno and head up through hawthorne on the way up. Less mountain driving that way.
Re: from LA to Reno
Definitely Hwy 395, for someone like Me (direction impaired) it is easy and takes you right to the 80. From the inland empire, it usually takes Me 9 hours to Reno.

Re: from LA to Reno
You could break off from 395 in Carson City and take Hwy 50E to Hwy 95N, which hits Fernley on I-80. Once there, cross the interstate and your're on your way.
It's a few miles closer, no Reno traffic and you pass 3 gas station in Fernley vs 1 in Wadsworth that never seems to be open when I pass through.
This route through Carson will take you past a WalMart, Trader Joe's, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe's, a couple of grocery stores, and several brothels just outside the city limits

I agree. And Carson City is a great place to do your shopping too.

Re: from LA to Reno
The route mudpuppy000 suggested, 395 past Mono Lake to CA167 toward Hawthorn would be good. Avoids all the stop and go driving through Gardnerville and Carson City.
If you take the route mudpuppy000 suggests, through Hawthorn, just make sure you make the left turn before Schurz, onto 95A toward Yerington. Otherwise you will
go through Schurz, and the tribal police there SUPPOSEDLY, have a loose nut toward burners passing through. And it will take longer as you would have to into Fallon.
Two right turns in Yerington. Past Yerington, just stay on 95A into Fernley. Left at the stop light and wind past the truck stops and cement plant to Wadsworth and right on 447.
By then you should be smellin playa dust.
Make a right at the light, go through the confusing traffic circle (round about) and there is a WalMart in Fernley on the east side of town.
Good luck to you and be safe.

I don't need to go anywhere near tribal police so I think I will stick with the weather mans advise
confusing circles or round abouts aren't a problem im from Australia they cant build a road here without putting a few of them in

Welcome!!
If you go the way weatherman says, highway 50 east out Carson City, you'll go right past my house. I live a few blocks south of 50.

Here's the route I take. I've been through Schurz several times without any problems. Any of these small towns along this route will bust you for speeding though, especially in CA. That may be why some people have had problems in the past.

You WILL be driving through a reservation after you hit Hwy 447 on the way to BRC. It's called the Pyramid lake Paiute reservation. Wonderful tacos...
Oh my god, it's HUGE!

Re: from LA to Reno
They're up in the mountains between the 5 and 395. Its possible but will probably take at least a day. Driving a motorhome in the mountains isn't fun either.
along the rout you can also see ancient bristlecone pines. Oldest trees in the world. Thats also far off the main route and up some really steep mountains.
Re: from LA to Reno
Just curious, would you possibly be able to take another passenger (with quite a bit of stuff?)? What kind of vehicle are you driving? I have a tent, carport, foam pad, 2 large tubs, 1 small tub, a suitcase, and a bike. I am a small girl though (116 pounds). I can pay for gas and bring lots of great car snacks. I need a ride from LA. Let me know! Thanks!

Hallihallo everybody!
Is anyone leaving from LA or San Diego on Thursday/Friday 22nd/23rd heading directly to the playa and has place for a body, a backpack and (not necessarily) a bike? Hooope so!
Good last organization days and happy burn to everyone!
Love,
Lorenzo

Re: from LA to Reno
Yes!! There is no comparison as far as scenery goes and its also quite a shorter drive (although you'll be dealing with grades and lower speed limits as it passes through many towns). If you have a few minutes to spare make sure you do a quick stop at the mono lake (just off the freeway), it's gorgeous!... But if driving at night I'd take the Nevada route after Bishop as you won't be seeing much anyway and you avoid dealing with animals crossing the road and rockfalls once you reach the Bridgeport area.
