An alternative to bread bread bread?!?!?!
It seems that by perusing these forums I have learned that bread has a tendency to quickly go stale on the playa. If this is the case, then what should I use as an alternative to make my peanut butter and jellies sandwiches? Pita bread perhaps? tortillas? What keeps well on the playa for this purpose? I refuse to use crackers for PB & J, that just doesnt seem right and the pb & J filling would most likely squeeze out as the crackers get sandwiched together.
Or perhaps there is a secret method to keeping bread fresh?!?!?! Do tell me now, what is the secret to bread on the playa?
Also why do some people insist that dogs say "bow wow"? This is what I was taught extensively in elementary school but I have never in my life heard a dog say "bow wow". I dont get it!

*bows down and worships the great Tortilla*lucky420 wrote:Tortillas...always and forever
I tried bagels 2 years ago cause i usually love having them when we go camping. Bad idea. Too heavy/bready when your appetite is suppressed from the heat (and stuff). Loaves of bread get smashed/stale/soaked in a cooler.
Tortillas are cheap, pack small, last forever, and are like the swiss army knife of bread. You can make PBJ, quesadillas, burritos, use them to dip into stuff (hummus, etc), toast them and wrap them around some lunch meat.... if there were a god, they'd be god's gift to man.

Yup:
tortillas
cheddar cheese
bacon
dozen eggs
pickled jalapeno peppers
chocolate bar
peanut butter
hot sauce
Infinite combinations (although I shy away from any cheddar and chocolate combos)
I also stop at TJ's and get a couple of bags of fried rice (chix and veg), the tortilla cuts down on the need for plates an utensils*
Plus it's an adequate playa replacement for naan if you're doing Indian**

Re: An alternative to bread bread bread?!?!?!
I've had good luck with bagels and tortillas. I'm going to try bringing out some homemade beer grain bread this year. It seems to last quite a while at home without any refrigeration.
Re: An alternative to bread bread bread?!?!?!
An aside on the subject of tortillas, I had little luck with corn (turned flakey and broke/crumbled) but flour held up fine.

I will say that those thin bagels might be worth a try (a recent discovery of mine). But again... so bready....... Though they would probably make better grilled cheese than tortillas.

I like pitas! They seem more hardy and you can just rip off some chunks and dip them into stuff like hummus.

My secret to "freshness" (i.e. not-gone-badness) is to 1) close the damn bag after I'm done, and 2) leave the bag in the fridge/cooler. You can freeze bread too. It also works well at home, especially if you're buying multiple loaves at a time from some place like Costco.

I only have one cooler (for milk, fruit cups, champagne etc) and don't want to stick bread in there, so I tend to put the bread on top of the cooler, in the shade.Savannah wrote:It doesn't have to be Wonder Bread or anything. You can still get whole grain commercially made bread. Just store it in a cool, dry place (not in the car or a hot tent) and open it daily for up to 30 minutes to air it out, preferably facing away from wherever the wind is coming from. This is counter-intuitive, leaving bread open, but it can keep bread nice for 5+ days. Last year I never did get mold at all, actually.
But concentrate it in your early meals, just in case.

You can make and freeze PB&J in advance. Individually wrap them and put them in a box (an Eggo box works well) that is also wrapped/zip locked to prevent them from getting squished - they're kinda tasty when its hot and they're still a little frozen.

Oh... And if they do get a little squished - it's like I tell my kids.... You have to chew it up to eat it anyway!

What makes bread go stale?
Moisture.
Think it through.
Just keep the dust off it and you'll be fine.

Or if you're super lazy you can buy them already made and frozen at costco.PhoenixFemmeFatale wrote:You can make and freeze PB&J in advance. Get the blue or green tortillas. this way you won't know when they go bad.
There is a tortilla factory near me. I pick up a 50 pack which is like $1 just before a motorcycle trip. Can't beat carrying 50 pieces of tortillas in the same space as a large bialy.
Oh, those instant bread and biscuit things that come in cans are good too. The Pillsbury stuff. They make ones that do not need refrigeration.
If you have oranges you can eat the orange, without destroying the peel and bake them right inside the orange peel.
Check some bushcraft and survivalist boards for other interesting home brew or redneck bread making recipes. There is one in particular which is great but I cannot recall the name right now. Simple to make with premixed ingrediets.

The problem I've had with bread is mold, so I would go for the cooler. Many crackers come in completely burnable packaging. As a side note:

Indian fry bread is a great fresh alternative - I premix all the dry ingredients, then mix and fry up on playa.

Sometimes I'm confused by what I think is really obvious. But what I think is really obvious obviously isn't obvious.

Scoop the peanut butter and the jelly out of the jar (package) with your fingers and then wash it down with Guinness Stout.
