Question about yurt with swamp cooler inside or outside?

Post by MadBurner » Tue Jul 02, 2013 1:03 pm

Hello All

I'm building a yurt for the first time an h15, I have build a swamp cooler and my question is the following:
Should I place the swamp cooler inside or outside the yurt?

I understand the swamp cooler needs dry air, so I was thinking in placing the swamp cooler inside the yurt next to my yurt vent.

Any thought comment/suggestion is welcomed.

Cheers

Pictures please.

If your cooler pulls the air in from only one side of the cooler, shove that side against the vent opening and make sure to get a good seal around it.

Don't forget a second vent.

dont mind the top exhaust is not yet mounted once I mount the exhaust will face the opposite direction from the intake vents.

Looks like you need more holes.

How many CFM does your fan produce?

Outside. It works with humidity and heat. It will equalize temp if on the inside and not cool.

Not sure why... but I did the research a couple years ago.

I had a batt powered swamp cooler on our yurt with the duct dumping on our bed. Took naps at 3:00pm high heat! Best ever!

Also we stacked and zip tied milk crates for shelves. And used a rolling rack for our fur coats :)

It looks like it needs to be able to draw more air through the pad= more holes or cut a strip out were the holes are now.

it makes sense.... I may cut a square hole where the round ones are... thanks for the suggestion
but I'm still curious why it needs to be outside even though the vent are going to be pointing towards the vents on the yurt

What do you mean by "equalize" temp? I'm curious because last yr I had a box cooler on my inside wall, and for 2013 I'm prepping my design to be outside.

But logically it seems it would work differently outside, with the container being exposed to the outside temp rather than being inside the shaded yurt. How, I'm not sure. Don't know if it helps or hurts, but doubt it could be the same as the climate is not the same in each position.

Maybe the cooler outside with the heat helps more evaporation thus more cooling? Or maybe the outside heat on the box counteracts the cooling effect? All I do know is plenty of good reports come from designs that were outside.

FIGJAM's design, on the other hand has way more fan & vent bang for the amount of cubic feet in his playapod, so for him the inside design works fine. With an 8' yurt we are talking over triple the cubic ft to cool. If you can get an inside design to work then you get the benefit of your cooler staying cleaner (if that matters to you). But I think what Figjam is emphasizing is make sure you have enough air intake and fan power to match the space of the yurt. That's where I think I failed last yr and didn't get as good results with 1 side of intake. So I'm putting my box outside with intake on 3 of its sides and the fan sticking in the yurt.

FIGJAM's unicooler works installed inside or outside. Fan always on the inside side, sucking air through the swamp-cooler, for best performance.

His boxcooler has three filters to feed air to, so it has to be on the outside (fan always on the inside side, sucking air through the swamp-cooler, for best performance). (you can put it on the inside and reverse the fan direction, but experience shows this doesn't cool as well - read the whole of his main thread if you're a glutton for punishment and need to know why you want the swamp-coolers to have an internal negative pressure, not positive pressure).

Provided a FIGJAM designed swamp-cooler has enough water flow for the air-flow you're putting through it (it does if you've used the recommended components), it will cool just fine. Measurements show they cool near or at the theoretical maximum. If it's not mounted on a wall, the cooled air should be in an insulated duct. Having the cooler shaded, insulated or inside will use somewhat less water. Some report they feel they don't get full cooling if the swamp-cooler is baking in the sun; they shade it and its fine.

The cooler being inside or outside the space makes very little difference as long as the air passing through the cooler comes from outside. (dry, hot, outside air.)

Once the cooler has been running 20 minutes, the water inside the cooler will be about 58 degrees no matter where the cooler is.

It doesn't matter if it's inside or out. While cool water is nice, swamp coolers don't rely on the temperature of the water to cool your body. Rather the swap coolers rely on the process of evaporation, where heat is transferred to the water molecules, which are then exhausted to the outside.

The important part is that you have an exhaust fan so that the moisture that is carrying away the heat from your body can leave your surroundings. You can't cool yourself from sweating if there's nowhere for that water vapor to go, and likewise the "forced sweating" that the swamp cooler is providing needs an exhaust as well.

My point was that the water temp keeps the unit cool whether it's in the sun or not.
