Connecting conduit

I am making a flat canopy structure this year that is 10x20 to cover me and my roomies tents (8 feet high). i would like to combine the emt for the top in 2 5 foot long pieces instead of a 10' so that I can fit it in my Vibe without having windows open. Does anyone see any issues with using a coupler to make 2 five foot sections into 10 feet? Was thinking using one of these: http://tinyurl.com/njt76cg . Unsure if this will be strong enough on the top , at least close to 1 10 foot section so thought I'd ask to see if anyone has done it before with success (or not!).

Those connectors you linked to won't work.

Get some sticks of EMT one size larger than what you're using and cut a bunch of 2' pieces to use as connectors.

ok, you don't think they would need some sort of clamping on the 2 foot section to hold the emt ?

was also looking at screw in coupling too, any thoughts on that?

My 7 foot high steel shade has been made with 2-part legs, for the same reason. (I didn't want to be forced to drive a truck or van just to get my shade to the playa.) The two-part legs connect in the middle with a (foot long?) "sleeve" made of a larger diameter. No bolts or anything. The top corners, and the bar across the center top also have sleeves (with 3 inputs instead of 2 like the legs).

It's very heavy, and gets guyed down with rope & rebar, twice per corner.

Drill holes through the connectors and use these to hold everything in place.

Larger diameter sleeves as suggested above, no holes no bolts or anything, just blue painters tape it!

If your wanting to make the 10 foot poles transportable, I'd start with 1 3/8 " fence tubing. One end is tapered, so all you would need to do is cut it in half, flip the pieces and you have a connecting 10' piece. For corner and side fittings I use the fittings from Creative Shelters.

I've used these, and they work well. They don't like us to post commercial links. Try doing a google search for "emt canopy two way fitting." And yes on the blue tape in case you strip the screws and/or bring a few extra fittings.

Heya Eklypz! As others have pointed out, pipe fittings from the big box hardware joints won't work. Aside from measuring pipes differently, the connectors aren't long enough or designed to do what you need. Look for EMT conduit fittings, they're available online and in some towns you can get them locally. The specific part you're looking for is called a coupler. I wouldn't use more than one coupler in a sequence for a structure frame though, or you risk things getting wiggly in the wrong way. Good luck!
