Join Camps? Building a structure and need land? New friends!

Post by joiebotkin » Thu Jul 18, 2013 4:06 pm

Hi friends! Hope you're all super well! Here's the long story short:
My community and I have been a theme camp for the last six years and have built a giant shade structure where we have community space, activities and try to create something engaging and magical. We're an inclusive, laidback, openminded bunch of BM vets based in SF and L.A.
However, this year we're not able to build our shade structure and looking to join forces with a camp/bunch of people who were planning on building something amazing where we could have community space and host an activity.
We have an enormous and amazingly placed parcel of land/theme camp and volunteers eager to help build. Ideally you have a structure you've built several times, that you're transporting, that ideally has community space. Together we can build something amazing! Look forward to linking up and making new friends!

Hi! I'm looking for a good camp. I do not have a shade structure. But, I am a rather hard-working individual with a car and an interest in finding a good camp to work with. And you guys sound like you have great spirit.

So, if you have room for another volunteer after finding someone with the shade structure you're looking for, please let me know.

Cheers & best of luck in your search.

You may want to consider stepping up your efforts in the radical self reliance department. Take a look at the Spark collaboration tool. Read the How To Join A Camp thread at the top of this board. Read through the partial list of registered theme camps on the main site, or just peruse these boards.

You may want to consider using the Sparkcollaboration tool, reading the How Do I Join A Camp thread, and looking through the partial list of registered camps. And take a look at the list of camps who've posted threads on this board - there are no shortage of options, and many of them are still looking for additional members.

Show your future campmates your awesomeness how hard-working and resourceful you are by actively searching, rather than just sitting back and posting a 'seeking camp' thread.

Thanks for the thoughts. That's sincerely appreciated, even while they're linked with the rather patronizing assumptions about my degree of self-reliance, etc.

Cheers, see you on the playa. : )

It might have helped if your post weren't so generic...

Ah, reasonable people can disagree about many things, so I'll just return this thread to the control of it's rightful owners.

*s8gh*

We really do see a wide range, including people who've not only never been, but haven't read the guides... There's a reason why we assume the worst and try and head off problems as soon as possible.

And there's always the forum at the top of the page where you can introduce yourself, including previous experiences on playa.

All of which is fine. None of which requires the addition of a patronizing tone, which has no place if someone wishes to truly be helpful. Hence my original response, appreciative for the information while noting and rejecting the patronizing tone and it's accompanied assumptions.

See you all there, and perhaps we'll have a drink. : )

How can you discern tone accurately and beyond a doubt on the internet?

Up until ^^

I had yet to discern anything patronizing in this thread.
Maybe I don't read tone in plain type.

or maybe I'm just doing it wrong. 8)

I feel pretty comfortable in discerning what I do and don't like. The part of the message that I highlighted passed my own subjective tests for something I consider patronizing.

Communication is a two-way street. We are all partners in creating it. When I speak, if someone misinterprets me then that is partly on them for not interpreting properly - and partly on me for not speaking properly.

Text on the Internet being without social cues increases the challenge of being heard clearly, and it also increases the importance of it.

Other people can have their own subjective opinions, and I'm fine with that as well. Someone else not seeing what I see, neither proves me right or proves them wrong.

Cheers all. : )

I hope you've spent as much time searching for a camp as you did rambling on like that -- three days after the previous post.

Already found a camp, thanks! Amazing how quickly that can be done. Perhaps it's just quicker because there's less distraction from nitpickers. Some of whom ask for further explanation and others who complain when they get it.

The way around this is to charge enough money to become a plug and play camp. You can hire workers from the front of Home Depot. They generally do not wish for a multi-day job away from home, the dust, and the weirdness of burning man, but if you pay them enough, they'll still do the job.

You're more than welcome to interpret my all or part of my post as patronizing, just as I interpret 'where do I camp?' threads as coming up short in initiative and resourcefulness. Glad to hear you found a camp.

Me too. : )

And yes, we are both more than welcome to interpret things in any way we like, and express ourselves as we choose. It's a wonderful universe.
