Maybe if people stopped seeing posts that suggested it was okay to ignore the rules and bring feathers to the playa...tatonka wrote:... I see other people wearing those cheap feathered headress and try to do something to prevent it. Maybe they would follow that example
I trust that once you get your ticket in hand, along with the Survival Guide, that you'll get around to reading the entire Survival Guide.

Re: Feathers?
There were some guys at Element 11 when I attended my first year talking about the "playa chicken" (I had no idea what it was at the time) and threatening to blow up one inside our car using an air cannon if we had any with us (they really had an air cannon) to demonstrate what a mess they could make.
Fortunately, we didn't have any.

Re: Feathers?
What about sequins or should that be another thread?
I was shopping for some playawear in SF and the saleslady brought me a bunch of sequin tops. I told her I can't take that to the playa. She said her last customers just bought a bunch of same tops for their first time. I expected people in San Fran to know better.
My mom bought me a hat at a thrift store and was all excited to give it to me. When I saw the feathers, I told her thanks but I couldn't take it to Burning Man and she replied "oh.. the feathers would be MOOP, right?" So sweet but I do wear it to other parties.

Well, here's one solution.

Nice. I like this design. In a colorful stripe pattern it would be great.
Or...Make it then paint it.

Re: Feathers?
Well, Times they are a changin. Todays 'Jack Rabbit speaks' has a small talk about feathers. The evolution of feather costumes has moved away from those moopy feather boas to more substantial head dress and such. The closing line from Burning Man newsletter is
So be smart. Be self-reliant. Use good judgment and be careful about what you do and don't bring (and wear) to the playa. If you want to wear feathers, OK ... but make sure they're attached in way that won't fail, and if you can't do that then don't wear 'em, because it's on YOU if they become MOOP.
And that goes for anything you bring to Black Rock City.
I'm so glad to see this. Now lets talk about beads instead.

Re: Feathers?
That's exactly how I feel being part American Indian, not to mention the Moop?! I would think that someone would be "policing" on the playa or even "confiscating" feather head dresses and boas. I was really shocked because 2013 was my first year and to see so many burners blatenly sticking a middle finger at the rule by wearing feathers was shocking. Just saying.RedHeaven wrote:Wearing feathers blatantly says "I care more about the way I look than the genuine rules of this city"
Even if the feathers are secure....it just says the wrong thing.
My buddy worked for hours at home on a pair of puffy paint pants, but once he realized they mooped he put the damn things away. Its that simple.
Peace yo! Lookout! Jewelz on the Playa
Re: Feathers?
The 'feather' rule was rescinded this year. The revised rule says that feathers are 'OK' if they aren't moopy. (From the JRS). Still, no boas. They are ALL moopy.

I'm prepared to assume the best about people and think that they might have spent 10 minutes and 30 cents worth of crazy glue making sure the feathers were extra secure...lucky420 wrote:Yes and all those cheap ass headdresses were secure
Not to mention the really cheap ones use synthetic feathers which are inherently less moopy provided an entire feather doesn't come off.

Re: Feathers?
Lets be really clear about this. Anyone who summarily, unilaterally, and without clear authority, takes it upon themselves to decide how someone ELSE is going to 'Burn, that person will likely be found missing some teeth and wire-tied to the trash fence at sunrise. Its not that I disagree with your aversion to frathers, its that I violently and passionately disagree with the way you would allow enforcement of a non-rule to occur.Jewelz2013 wrote: I would think that someone would be "policing" on the playa or even "confiscating" feather head dresses and boas. If feathers offend you, then the best way to prevent feather-Moop is to not wear any. Suggest to others there are neat alternatives (ala Tatonka's leather-crafted art pieces). And if you have an urge to do so, maybe make some moopless feathers to gift. (Many noobs may not be aware of the moop factor or may not ever have seen an artistically neato replacement). But don't try to channel your inner Moop Nazi and try (or permit by inaction someone else) to confiscate something. Even more so than wearing moopy feathers, THAT would be most "unburnerish" IMHO.

Yeah, as much as I hate people shitting up the place with their MOOPy costumes, vigilantism for non-criminal acts is taking things a bit too far.GreyCoyote wrote:[D]on't try to channel your inner Moop Nazi and try (or permit by inaction someone else) to confiscate something. Of course that doesn't mean those people can't be subjected to ridicule, but assaulting individuals and and stealing parts of their costumes -- for feathers or otherwise -- only makes you the criminal.

Yeah, especially the chase and tug-of-war that would ensue. Imagine the same thing with someone going after someone carrying around a big sack of styrofoam peanuts, a dry Christmas tree, or a beanbag chair!FossaFerox wrote:Not to mention any attempt to forcibly seize a feather would be the moopiest thing you could possibly do.
