Non-electric K-Cup coffee

Post by LittleJack » Thu Jul 25, 2013 12:39 am

It's funny - I like but don't love coffee, but I love all the coffee gadgets. For a few years I brought a Bialetti stove top espresso maker with me, which works incredibly well. However, it's bit of a MOOP and cleanup headache dealing with the coffee grinds. I also brought a Handpresso one year, which uses coffee pods. The coffee isn't great, and it only makes very tiny cups at a time.

At home we use a K-cup machine, since my wife likes different coffee than I do, and they're rather neat and tidy, if not even slightly green. Lots of coffee selections, and they also have tea and hot cocoa. I just came across a manual french press that takes K-Cups! Put the K-cup in the holder, pour in boiling water, and use just like any other French Press. I think it's nifty, and am strongly considering bringing one this year, even though last year I think I only made one cup of coffee.

Yeah, I know you get way better coffee with just a paper cone filter over a cup, and it's very easy to throw away the grounds with minimal clean up. It's not about the coffee, damn it, it's about the toys! :)

If you like the taste of those K-cups, that works. I'm more into ground coffee, so I use an Aeropress with a metal filter. The paper filters work good too, but you have to bring them and they sometimes block some of the coffee oils that the metal filter would pass through. I use the Aeropress for all my coffee at home. On trips, you just bring finely ground coffee and press it through for a nice cup of coffee. The best part is that it cleans up very easily with a dense little "pucks" of coffee grounds that you can trick people into thinking are brownies.

I suggest that K-cup coffeemakers are MORE "green" because you don't have to use the disposable cups, you can use the re-usable filter thingie and pour in your own coffee.
I'd definitely bring my home K-cup machine if I didn't think the playa would fuck it up like it does everything else. Those are truly awesome appliances!
