Driving from Southern California. Which route is best?

Google maps says this route is fastest from So Cal to Gerlach: 395 North, then highway 167/359 from Lundy north of lee vining CA and mono lake to 95 north through hawthorne and schurz to Fallon to 50 to Fernley NV. Did anyone drive that route in 2012? How was it as far as availability of gas, time saved and getting pulled over vs the 395 from So Cal to Reno? Also that route vs 5 North to 80 East? Thanks!
