Rudeness via Admins
Rudeness via Admins
So, I was extremely upset today upon hearing of the following incident:
My dad (a 21 year Burner, yes from the San Francisco days) started an account on this site today to get into contact with any theme camp who may need help setting up or what-have-you. He mentioned that he would like to get into the event early and participate in a theme camp. He ACCIDENTALLY posted his message twice, and while I understand that the Early Arrival passes are non-transferrable,etc., his intention with this request was nothing but benevolent. However, he received an extremely rude response condemning and chastising him for his post and for spamming. First of all, not everyone is entirely proficient with computers, and he did not know that he double posted nor was his intent to scam or mooch off of anyone. Second of all, I expected MUCH more tolerance from this community. Instead of accosting him with accusations, I would expect someone to explain to him how he was wrong instead of assuming things about his intent or the extent of his knowledge on the Early Arrival system, and acting like he was double posting on purpose in order to spam. How about showing a little RESPECT and UNDERSTANDING?? Our community is supposedly based on such concepts so why is it so different via internet rather than in person? If you had met him in person I doubt that such a blatant attack would have occurred. So, how about showing some of that playa spirit on ePlaya and actually communicating with someone before you verbally assault them for a mere misunderstanding?
As for me, I think I will stick to my in-person Burner to Burner interactions. At least the people I know exhibit the spirit of community that Burning Man has shown me to be possible.

Re: Rudeness via Admins
Hmm. You're gonna lump ALL of us into the not-worth-my-time asshole department, based on ONE interaction with ONE person?
There's some pretty cool, nice, knowledgeable and helpful people here. We're all burners. You run into the occasional person who rubs you the wrong way on the real playa too ya' know.
I've noticed something about people; it's often the friend (or family member) of the person involved in an issue that gets the most belligerent and upset over it. I've been in customer-service type situations where that was regularly the case.
You'll be fine without eplaya, and eplaya will be fine without you, but if you want to lead the way with tolerance and respect then maybe check out this awesome community of great burners before condemning the whole bunch!
Either way, see ya' on the playa!

This post was directed at the admin that poorly handled the situation, not at the users on the site. My dad's post was deleted after he was accused of spamming :/ It was just like, the icing on the shit cake that was today of dealing with totally unpleasant people. Ya dig?
P.S. thank you for letting me rant. Sometimes you just gotta get it out.

publicly airing grievance publicly is only acceptable during festivus and the week after the burn where all complaints are hallow.

Well,
Actually most folks here are nice (snarky but nice).
Meanwhile, one of the most basic rules here (#3 to be exact) is no crossposting. http://eplaya.burningman.org/viewtopic.php?f=80&t=55547
Sorry there is some butt hurt going on, but seriously if you want to be part of a community you have to follow that community's rules (applicable on any place on earth, not just here).
Eplaya is distinctly different than the playa. accordingly it has different standards of behavior.
You wouldn't walk the playa dropping moop without expecting to be called on it - don't expect special treatment for breaking the rules here either.
Seems like you need to take a step back and reevaluate this rant.

Hi Baby.
I read your dad's post this morning and almost replied to it. Chitchat mostly, but also to point out that he appeared to be someone who'd Burned for 21 years and not WAS 21 years.... "21 year burner" could be read two ways (especially in here, where spelling and grammar can be interesting). I thought it worth a mention.
But unfortunately instead I had a nap.
I understand your ire. You think your dad was dissed by the community he brought you up to love. Were I in your shoes and it was MY dad, I'd be pissed. Mightily so.
Please realize though that the mods and admins here have to contend with all kinds of bullshit and it's not always an easy call to say something is legit or not. It's a tough and mostly thankless job, and we -- the rest of the community who don't have to deal with those kinds of decisions -- are grateful for what they do everyday behind the scenes to keep most of the ugly at bay.
Mistakes ARE made. We're all human.
I hope both of you will give us all a second chance.

Re: Rudeness via Admins
it's not eplaya, it's text based human interaction.
when eplaya (and the rest of internet) evolve to use communication that can transmit human communication nuances, then fewer non-asshole interactions will get mistaken for the real deal.

I was not the Mod who handled this, so I can't comment on the "rudeness" level of the response, but I can address one point, having read the both the original post & the beginning of this discussion:
This would be the issue, not the fact it was posted twice (we regularly merge or delete cross posting). Due to past abuses of the system, asking for, bartering, or the offering in trade of Early Entry passes is strictly forbidden by Burning Man, and we remove any and all posts that have that, not just your dads. Those passes are to be used by camps for their absolutely necessary members, not because someone wants to get in early. For next year, your dad might want to find a camp he wants to participate with earlier in the year, and if they get placed he might get an EA that way. Being based in the Bay Area makes it easy, there are lots of great camps to come out of that area.

There is no way for a one page document to cover every variable involved in the event. Camps who get EA passes know the rules, and the posts here are generally pulled quietly, with a PM to the poster explaining why, and it isn't an issue. Since this thread was going on, I thought an explanation was in order.lemur wrote:you should add that to the Terms Of Service • Community Guidelines pages

OK let's quit all this pussyfooting around. Who was that rude moderator?
I really don't care which mod it was, but frankly, I have never known any of the new mods to be rude or inconsiderate while performing their moderator duties. So, I would find it amusing to know who she thought was rude. And my guess is that anybody that said anything to her dad that he or she didn't want to hear, no matter how politely stated, would have been considered rude to her.

It was not sweet Savannah. One thing that should be noted is that text is a rather dry format, unless you know a person it is often difficult to pick up clues on the interaction. The response I thought was straight to the point and did not come across as rude, but I know the authors writing as well. A PM would have been the better way to handle this IMO, but your mileage may vary.
