Need a bike that's nearly free
Need a bike that's nearly free
After buying my ticket this afternoon, the seller strongly advised me that I needed a bike. After doing some research I came across this link
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/t ... fyDTpcpDvF
Being that this will be my first burn, I'm making every attempt to not to find myself in a financial hole (it will be a miracle if my Burning Man budget doesn't exceed $1000).
In New Orleans they have a place called Plan B where you can build a bike for free...don't quite know why I mentioned that but right now I'm trying to put myself in a crackhead's shoes. For $20 there's gotta be a way to have access to a bike for a week.
(My apologies for the crackhead reference but I thought it was one step above the idea of jacking unlocked bikes at night)
All jokes aside I just want a no frills ghetto bike to use for a week.

read up in the literature about the "yellow/green bikes", they are out there for everyone to use.

We crackheads do like a good deal, so your reference is apt.

Can you link me to the literature you're referring to? (I'll attempt a search myself momentarily)ygmir wrote:read up in the literature about the "yellow/green bikes", they are out there for everyone to use.
Welcome!
Spent the last hour looking into a backup plan of buying a fold up bike small enough to be conidered carry on at the airport. What I found were either too expensive or unfeasible to ride in the sand (a-bike).
I also had a concern about traveling with the bike once I'm in Reno...searching for a ride with enough room for a bike (along with your luggage) would prove to be a challenging task.
Unless I get lucky or a sweet deal comes my way, I'll be putting my faith in those green and yellow community bikes.
Thanks alot for the info!

yup, that's it. well done!nycrollas wrote:http://www.burningman.com/on_the_playa/ ... playa.html
thanks for be self reliant!!
it's a cool deal, sometimes frustrating, but, they are everywhere, and no one is allowed to "keep" them, so, if it's not being used, it's up for grabs!! Don't let anyone tell you different, like that they are using it "for the week, or day".
there are also several camps that loan out bikes and stuff.
You'll discover so much, just looking for them.
I don't know the names, but, they exist.
good luck!

perhaps reconsider your usage of the word "need"

Do you know anyone with a big vehicle that is driving up from your city? you could get your nearly-free bike at home (and decorate it, too!) and then have someone bring it for you. That's what i am doing!

It's a balancing game - the bike allows you to range farther faster but at the cost of seeing and engaging as easily.nycrollas wrote:Just going off of an experienced burners advice. I've only been twice and many years apart but my 1st burn with broken bike and soft ground felt somehow bigger (although going in without a clue of what to expect was a contributing factor)
My 2nd burn with good conditions and working bike allowed me to range all over but I interacted less.
This year I will mix it up!

Re: Need a bike that's nearly free
Needing and demanding it be nearly free can come off as a bit petulant. Just saying I would have phrased it differently.
