I am from Louisiana, and I cook for a living...The grill station clocks in at 125 on a slow night, most days here where I live it is 95-102 degrees this time of year. So im great with the heat, no problem. But this cold situation is buggin me now. Im doubting the local Wal-Mart will be stocking any thermal undies, or anything warm at all right now frankly. Oh well, its been time to dig out all the camping gear anyway.

I plan on pitching a tent underneath a monkey hut, possibly with my vehicle or companions hexayurt covering the open side. Will being under this somewhat enclosed situation offer any protection from the cold? I do have a propane powered heater, which of course requires ventilation, which is fresh (cold) air...Seems like a conundrum. I do have electric blankets, but how would one go about powering that on the playa?

Skip the heater and the electric blankets. Probably too complicated. Bring a sleeping bag rated for 40F or colder, roll a blanket and a flat sheet up inside it. Bring long johns, thermals or fleece to sleep in, or to layer with your outdoor clothes while you're wandering.

A thick fluffy bathrobe--especially a funny one--can be fun to wear as a coat if it's only medium-cold. Don't forget to hang some lights on it. You'll be like a drunk uncle at Christmas.

I'm sure I have said this before but, chemical hand warmers (HotHands or similar) can be found in any camping or surplus store or even on line for less than a dollar a pair. Throw one or two into your bedding at bedtime and by the time you get your clothes off etc the chill is gone.

id much prefer 55 or 60 to 80 when im trying to sleep.

Supposed to drop back down by tomorrow, and possible rain again. Here in Sac it's been humid, and last night the low was 70. I was outside until 3am, not a whiff of a breeze. It was still about 80 when I went in. Totally miserable.

we have a fire going all night long that calls out to the cold and lost..

the cold and lost who show up not knowing where they are or where they are going are often encouraged to sit down on one of the couches nearby the fire to warm up a bit before they are told that we know exactly where they are and exactly where they are going.. plus offering any other help they may need... it really is amazing to see them relax once they realize that they are OK and that we are OK too! ..you can see it in their face/body.. real neat.. some people are unprepared for the cold, and unprepared for the navigation effort needed at night

EMS will have them as well. Right across the street from the Rangers and 3 & C an 9 & C. You can stand around them, but don't burn your trash in them.

I'm seeing conflicting weather forecasts for Gerlach. Wunderground is showing a week of 80/40F dipping into the 30's, Weather Channel has 90/55F. Input?

I think if you put Gerlach in wundergroud it gives you Alturas, which is at a higher elev.
