Wait a minute, looks like the train tracks are fenced in and I'm not seeing a pace to cross it...

The south end of the Playa by Gerlach can still be moist even this late in the summer. Don't try driving across the wet Playa or you will get stuck. It's also moist around the Frog Pond. It can be done, just watch where you're going.

There is a place you can cross the tracks, sorta. A little ways north of the Frog Pond but when I was there, it was still a bit wet and tricky. I was on a motorcycle though so a 4 wheel drive truck would be easier.

Well this looks like the best option... bummer I can find a crossing further south.

Thanks for the heads up, I will be extra careful. Of course I do some stupid thing with my Hummer.

We crossed north of there. I don't know if this link will word but point C is where we crossed. I don't know the condition of the one you're looking at.

Are you coming up 447 and plan on turning right onto Jungo before Gerlach or are you coming from the north on Jungo?

That Hummer is pretty badass but it don't stand a chance in hell against the wet Playa. You'll be up to your belly pan in a matter of seconds and completely stuck.

I'm not sure how far south the closure area goes, but I really don't think that south of the event is the way to go. Too much crap going on...

Ahahahaa! Reminds me of college. I never had my own jeep, but too many of my friends did and oh, the stupid stuff we got into! A friend came headed up the edge of a really steep gully once, and almost didn't make it . . . it must have shown.

"I didn't realize I was in trouble until I saw the looks on your faces!" he said.

. . . I still need a jeep of my own. Silver, so the scuffs are more subtle.

Could always have the map in hand to show someone if I were to get hassled crossing a solid 3.5 miles south of the restricted area for BM.
just be really sure, you are well outside the closure. It's not worth the time, getting stopped. and, remember, you have to find an exit
on the west side, to get on 34, if that's your plan. it's not just a smooth transition from playa to pavement.
and can be very soft in spots near the shoreline.

I would be 3.5 miles south of the restricted area as long as the map is correct.

I'll be very cautious when transitioning on to playa and back off by walking it a bit first. If you look at the map in satellite view is seems like very well used on and off sections.

There is an access road that will get you off the Playa onto Soldier Meadows Rd. if you stay to the north. Soldier Meadows will get you to 34 north of the main entrance to the Playa.

Any idea where that is located? From the aerial views they just don't look as good getting back on to 34.

maybe google some BLM, NDOT, and other maps. Some will show tertiary roads.
it's pretty tough, here, to say "oh, it's over by the black hill, with that canyon with the big rock in it".
Also, coming from Jungo, there are only a few places to cross the railroad tracks. And, there are "protected" areas over there that you're not supposed to drive on.

As you know, sometimes dirt roads move around so the sattellite images which are a few years old might not be very accurate. You might have to explore around a little to find access off the Playa. If worse comes to worse, you could just stay on Jungo till it hits 447 and join the fun in line at Gerlach.

That's what I figure, just thought I would add a bit more fun if I could and have the benefit of avoid getting in line as long as I can.

You could have the fun of having your vehicle spend the week in a line of one, stuck up to the axles?

Priority for tow trucks will be to clear the highway. Your turn would come when they've nothing better to do than pick their way carefully through to get you out without getting stuck themselves.

But that road sure looks interesting.
49 or 50, that is the question...

the whole playa "looking solid but it's not thing" is very very true.

we got stuck in 97'

it looked like hardpan.

it wasnt.

cost 500$ and we were lucky we didnt have to leave it there, i stopped immediately before i got too far in, in which case, even a tow truck wont try to get you if you're "outta reach".....sometimes a heavy beast like that is worse, actually.

but, go for it, whatever you're compensating for with the hummer could be made up for with stories of a great adventure.

Not compensating, I just like to off-road and h3 with locking axles was 1/3 less than a four door Rubicon of the same year.

couple thoughts about crossing the playa. I have only done it a few times near the event site, but not during the event.

close to Gerlach are some seeps that have the playa damp most of the time. also several miles northeast of the event site is a sink and several riverbeds lead towards it. recommend staying well away, like miles and miles from that area. look at google earth and zoom in and you can see the rivers all running together. also look at google earth closely where there are alluvial fans extending from the railroad tracks, like at Trego Springs. these are caused by water flow and may be wet.

get a winch mounted on the back of your vehicle, or a HEAVY DUTY come along, and a couple big boat anchors, and lots of cable to pull yourself back out.

find a copy of FM20-22 VEHICLE RECOVERY OPERATIONS and study up on making anchors and vehicle extraction.

there is no cell phone service, so get a sat phone and a CB.

water and grub for a week.. should be covered

The funny thing about experienced off-road drivers...is that they expect to get stuck and plan for it. It becomes part of the fun, actually. Travel in pairs if you do this.
