for stakes I found 12" gutter nails / with 2" washers , want to nail tarp right to ground , any problems?

the washer will be welded 2" down , so ill have 2" sticking up to attach lights , so only 10" will be in there.

if the nail is below the surface,..... and the tarp isnt huge, this should be fine.

i use these 7" stakes and they hold plenty well for a 2 person tent.

If you are talking about holding a complete tarp, that has been placed onto the ground - Yes.

Otherwise, Maybe... (maybe not, possibly maybe, ok - no!)

tarp would be attached to the tarp on top of the camper , steepe angle both sides , back shade tarp ill use 2' rebarr 1/2

Possibly.

• 2" washers holding what size of grommet? As in, will the washer cut into the tarp?
• Can the nails be angled into the ground so the grommet is 90 degrees to the nail shank. Grommets are meant to stay flat to the material and transfer the load inline with the plane of the tarp; else you might end up ripping the grommet out of the tarp.
• 2" of nail left sticking up is more than sufficient to achieve a brain case puncture, in addition to the potential of ripping open a foot, leg, face, etc. ... Like rebar stakes, you need to cap them for safety.
• FIGJAM's Lag Screw and chain links would allow you to tie a short loop from the grommets to the chain link so the grommet pulls inline to the tarp as it blows in the wind (changes angle?).
  The tarp wouldn't be tight to the ground, but right next to it, which also provides a path out the bottom for some pressure release when the wind gets in under the tarp.
  Super fast into and out of the playa with a cordless drill, or even a ratchet.

  Screws tight to the ground with a low profile so there's minimal injury possible with far less severity with what's exposed
• lag screw & washer could be used - without welding (you can change washer size or material easily) - to screw a tarp tight to the ground. Same concerns as the first two points.

You can put inverted plastic bottles over the nail/rebar/t post to lessen the "entertainment" factor. They also sell little orange caps that are designed specifically for this purpose at your local home improvement store. they're designed to fit any number of "head" diameters but I would check it out before purchasing. They're dirt cheap but come in bags of 25 or 50 IIRC.



They also come in a steel reinforced variety if you want to spring for c. $4 a pop to prevent impalement. As with most things it boils down to a cost/benefit analysis.

Thanks, canoe. I had not thought of the angled-stake solution and had forgotten about the chain solution. Of course FIGJAM has posted something thoughtful and clearly illustrated on the subject!

I get mine here for about a buck apiece when I buy 10.

The 12" are about 50 cents apiece.

at Ace they want 2.59 apiece for the 3/8 and 3.49 for the 1/2 , was going to look at home depot , but will order those on your link instead thks

long ago..when i was overdoing the 'hold my little tent' down thing.. i made these beasts



5/8th threaded rod, big nuts and washers.

leave one of the big huge nuts at the top so you can pound it in without the threaded rod mushrooming and when you either get tired of pounding or its in far enough you can use the other nut to tighten the washer closer to the playa.

a lot easier than 'candycaning' rebar.. hardest part was transporting the 12 foot thing of threaded rod and cutting it with a sawzall



dont use them anymore, and i tossed em after a recent move.. but its certainly a design that would work great for some playa uses.
