air mattress w/ comforter or air mattress w/ sleeping bag

Hi

I got an air mattress and I was thinking that I should get a sleeping bag as well. Would
a comforter be enough for the playa (the air mattress is covered with a sheet) ? I do notice that most people seem to bring both
but I wasnt sure why.

any insights?

I used to bring both but I never actually used the sleeping bag. A comforter and maybe an extra old blanket should be fine especially if you have a comfortable hoody or something if we get any super cold nights.

We use a blanket on the air mattress, and sleep inside a sleeping bag. The air in the mattress will be cold so you'll want an insulator between you and the mattress.
This is only during the late dark hours, once the sun comes up, well thats a different story.

Bring both. Maybe even an extra blanket.

The air mattress will get cold from the ground so you want to insulate yourself from the mattress. I put a blanket down first, then the air mattress, then a comforter. I sleep on top of that sandwich and use an opened up sleeping bag as a blanket. Cover the whole mess with a sheet during the day so it will be sorta dust free at night.

I don't like sleeping bags either. I feel a little mummified in them, and I agree--the zipper is cold.

I roll a regular weight blanket and a flat sheet inside a comforter, and put this on top of a cot with a thin foam mattress.

I think people bring both a bag and a comforter because 1) they happen to have both, and 2) because air mattresses are so cold.

I use an air mattress covered with a moving pad. Then sheets, a comforter and three wool blankets! Actually, I think I have only used all three blankets a couple of times. Many nights just the comforter is fine. But when it gets cold, the wool blankets sure are nice!

i 'upgraded' to one of those fancy Therm-a-Rest pro self inflating sleeping pads and wow it was the comfiest year ive had on the playa.

it is a bit skinny.

I've had the same air mattress through...I don't even know how many burns, now (and other trips). One of my favorite tips I learned, early on. "All that air, in your mattress, it's as cold as the air outside your mattress."

I don't insulate between the ground and the mattress, just a polar fleece blanket on top of it (then my fitted sheet, then me, then a sheet and my comforter from home. Nothing fancy.).

I like to use the jersey sheets (t-shirt material). Sort of a happy medium between flannel and...not. You want it all warm and cozy at night, but not come sunrise.

air mattress with a thermal camping pad between the mattress and a fitted sheet to prevent heat transfer. on top of that, i have my fur blanket, then me in my sleeping bag, all topped off with a comforter. i froze my ass off my first burn and it is a mistake i WILL NOT make again.

I use a double tall air mattress with a comforter on top, then a blanket, and another comforter or sleeping bag (open). Been working fine for me.
