Behold! Partial list of 2013 Theme Camps!
This year's partial list of theme camps is up! Check it out here.
I say partial because this is by no means a complete list. My understanding is that it comes from those camps that submitted a registration questionnaire, provided some info about their camp, and chose to make that information available on the list. Please understand that being on this list is not a guarantee that a camp that filled out the form will be placed, word on theme camp placement should be going out in early July. But for those who are looking for fun camps to join, or those who are just really excited and want to see what other people are getting up to, this is a great resource.

It would mean that A- they didn't submit a theme camp application by the due date or B- submitted an application but requested to not be publicly listed.theCryptofishist wrote:Well, Apok's not on there.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner. I think sometimes folks get thrown off by not looking for camps under "C" because they are listed as "CAMP Blahblahblah" instead of Blahblahblah. There was some confusion one year when we got listed under "The Paradise Motel" and not "Paradise Motel" so I've been careful to nix the "the" since then.zorro sings wrote:OR.......It is listed under "Camp "Apokoliptika

And now, behold
THE MIGHTY WORD CLOUD!!!!
Bravo on the Placement team took all the descriptions camp names from the camps who registered and chose to have their information listed publicly, and then removed "the" "and" and "camp" from the results to come up with this awesome info graphic. The bigger and more prominent the word, the more often it's used. Thanks for putting this together and sharing, Bravo!

I did exactly the same thing - went looking for ours and couldn't find it - then looked under "C" and voila!KestrelSF wrote:Ding ding ding! We have a winner. If you click on the image, it should show the full sized version. Only 1580 pixels wide, but still more legible than what you see on the board.
Re: Behold! Partial list of 2013 Theme Camps!
And once you click on it, you may be able to click again for a little more zoom.
I can also zoom in on it a bit using my iphone, but a tablet would be even better.

Re: Behold! Partial list of 2013 Theme Camps!
I like that they don't do it anymore. Years ago a list of addresses was published, and it didn't quite feel right (that and many camps preferred not to have their addresses published). Something felt a little theme-park-y, and in my opinion it kind of took something away from the magic of discovery. I think that when you have to do some work to find out camps' locations (either from connecting with them in advance to see if they're making their address public, or by trekking down to playa info, or by asking people), it's somehow a bit more meaningful an experience.
I've had years when I've made exhaustive lists, and years on the other extreme where I had no list at all (largely because it had been forgotten on the printer at home), and found that the shorter the list, the more amazing surprises and moments of playadipity I experienced.

List of camps is a great thing, however I remember there was another resource with _locations_ for theme camps.
Anybody has an idea where this can be found?

Re: Behold! Partial list of 2013 Theme Camps!
There are probably some out there to be found with your favorite search engines. Those are very much the map is not the territory, because they rely on people reporting their own camp addresses, or publishing them on the net to be found by the compilers.
You will be given a map at the gate which will be more accurate, but there will still be ... infelicities, shall we say... Simply not as many, since it is based on LLC info, that is as close to the horse's mouth as we get.

my mind ponders on "Cats" being quite large....are there going to be cats? Or have people got camps with a lot of "cool cats"????
or are there a lot of theme camps that advertise to cat lovers.....
Then i searched for my camp
and i found CatsCatsCats....surely 3 words didn't make it show up in the cloud?
i love these word clouds!
oh well, keep posting you crazy cats of eplaya!
Re: Behold! Partial list of 2013 Theme Camps!
Well, there was whereareyoucamping.org
but checking it now I see Kostume Kult is @ 8:30 & Esplanade, which means it is an old map - guess 2011 or earlier.
Me thinking this info should be available by now - least for the camps that got advanced placement. Don't know why placement team is hiding it - was under impression we're on the same side.
Not sure if I need to explain why it helps, say you want to check how you look in infrared - http://playaevents.burningman.com/2013/ ... vent/9109/
My "preferred search engine" gives me last year info, so not much help here, and I can't possibly write emails to every camp, which posts something of interest @ Playa events.
Yes, I know there gonna be a map and a brochure @ the entrance, but why not publish damn thing now so those of us who plan ahead would be able to do it more efficiently?
Or maybe I'm posing in a wrong forum?

Re: Behold! Partial list of 2013 Theme Camps!
As trilobyte stated just three posts above, the placement team doesn't publish this info anymore. It has nothing to do with "sides", some camps simply didn't want to be publicly listed because they had limited qty's to give away, or wanted to be a camp that was "discovered", or simply to avoid the theme park feel of "lets go find that ride we like". It hasn't been published for years.maxtov wrote:Me thinking this info should be available by now - least for the camps that got advanced placement. If you look in the "3:00", "9:00" etc threads on here, you can find camps that do want their locations known. Other than that, think of it as exploring a new city where you know the layout of the streets but not what's on them. Playadipity is usually more interesting than plans anyway.

Re: Behold! Partial list of 2013 Theme Camps!
You may need to reset your expectations and check your sense of entitlement. Theme camp location directories are not likely to be published by Burning Man in 2013 or future years.
Re: Behold! Partial list of 2013 Theme Camps!
Ok,
<<As trilobyte stated just three posts above, the placement team doesn't publish this info anymore>> - well, that info (map with camp locations) will be given out @ the gates, so by itself it is not gonna stay a secret.
I respect the desire of some camps to stay off the map and believe that a single line/checkbox on application for advanced placement can take care of that without interfering with desire of other camps to be visible and the ability of the rest of us to find what/who we're looking for.
<<You may need to reset your expectations and check your sense of entitlement. Theme camp location directories are not likely to be published by Burning Man in 2013 or future years.>>
The whole thing has nothing to do with "sense of entitlement" - I know I can search and probably find some of the camp locations in 3rd party postings elsewhere, however making this search procedure redundant is highly inefficient to put it mildly. I bet this list is compiled already, so making everybody run around in search of it... well, that leads to "expectations" part
Yes, I do have a few and one of them expectations is that burners should not make life of other burners artificially difficult. Is that too much? Lemme know...
As for <<Playadipity is usually more interesting than plans anyway>>
I do appreciate your wisdom sharing approach, however one doesn't exclude the other and secondly, wouldn't it be grand to have a choice (as opposed not having it) without somebody building an obstacle course on the way?

Re: Behold! Partial list of 2013 Theme Camps!
@maxtov - I'm pretty certain that maps with camp location will not be distributed at the gates. And yes, if you're setting yourself an expectation that somebody else should provide that information to you, it's an entitlement/expectation issue. Nobody's build an obstacle course, they're just respecting camps who choose not to have their locations made public and not publishing a list of camp locations.
