Places Of Employment can be grotesquely dangerous. I once delivered large rolls of paper weighing several thousand pounds each. The receiving dock was lower than the trailer floor level, so the trailer floor was downhill towards the rear. The receiving personnel found this convenient. They told me to walk into the trailer, release a roll, and run out of the trailer ahead of it to safety. And with each roll, the run became longer, and the rolls gained more speed.
The practice was discontinued the next day. I also worked in the Safety office at the trucking company. But not all drivers would be listened to.

That's crane Rule Number One!!

I break a zillion "rules" every day, going on judgement and experience to get a job done... but never that one!
Ain't it the truth.

We broke the Deparment's rules when we lifted a 12,000-pound tracked rig into the #2 sheetpile caisson for the Cape Girardeau Bridge over the Mississippi River during foundation construction and concrete pours. Ran a 3" water line over the top and down 40' to get water to cool the core bit while we proof cored the concrete.

We had ice on the crane straps the next day, lifted the rig out, and when we got it lowered within 6" of the ground, the back strap slipped. Then the other strap slipped off, and it deposited the rig right where we had wanted it. Lucky, lucky, lucky...........

I had the same drop you describe, ^Rhino, but with a 14' long piece of polished granite, it fell right into the slot, luckily, it was supposed to sit in.......I was going to rig it, but the crane operator said "you don't know, I know, I'll do it" I told him it'd not work his way, he eyerolled.
Since he was the "operator" and I was merely the guy who carved the granite, it was his call.........I'm so glad I didn't need to make another. And of course, I was between the crane and stone, so had it not fell in the slot, and instead tipped toward me, there was nowhere to go........

*wanders in from prepping*

ah jeeze, doesn't everyone have a close call, or two?
Perhaps.....just perhaps, I push things to the edge at times, work hard and fast, try things I'm told are not possible. But, if you are not living on the razors edge, it's all dull.
Yeah Savannah, I do enjoy them......I don't get there on purpose, but after it happens, and life and limb are intact, it's the most alive I ever feel.
Luckily, most of these events take place witnessed by varied folks, so no one person thinks I'm too nuts! haha.
And somehow, it makes me value all my friends, and my very, very small family.......the ones I love. Knowing at any time it can all be over.
yer all so special to me.......thanks for letting me join in and play here, and on the playa.

I hate it when I get ice on my crane straps. ;)
You guys have too much fun, just come home alive, that's all I ask.

Say, Ygmir, that's an awful rustic looking bar. Wouldn't it be great to sashy in there and say "I'll have a strawberry daiquiri".... ?

Maying some yakitori in the toaster-oven. When the smoke alarm goes off, it's cooked. That's a scientific fact.

There are 2 going, one in Lake Elsinore, one in Banning....I'm between them 20 miles each way.

Mostly I just listen to those who have lost things. Wish I could do more.

To date:

I've had three near-misses in traffic. One on US 50 in Jefferson City, where a concrete truck blew through the cones and missed me by about a foot; one on a state route west of St. Louis where a county mounty blew through WITH NO LIGHTS OR SIREN; and one on I-435 south of Kansas City, again by City of Grandview Police with no lights or siren. In traffic, you're hyper-aware. Every vehicle represents a potential hazard. LEOs blowing through my work zones get me riled big time, to the point of calling the Highway Patrol and asking for an arrest of the offending officer. I'd be happy to sign the complaint. "If the LEOs don't follow the law, why should the rest of us?" The county mountie who missed me brushed one of my most productive skilled drillers. If he had hit him, it would have taken the Highway Patrol to drag me off the county bumpkin. Unfortunately, it seems that LEOs look at reflective safety vests as targets.

Planning safety around heavy equipment is easy. Trying to prevent some sort of fucktard from killing you in traffic is a predictive craps shoot. You roll the dice, and hope it doesn't come up snake eyes. Roll long enough, odds are against you. I just try to leave myself plenty of poison ivy-free shoulder to dive towards.

I so understand what you're saying there Rhino.
I worked at underground utility installation: trenching down roads, or on the shoulder.
and, took a few reliefs shifts for flaggers, too.
Overnight was always the most exciting, about 2:30 when the drunks finally found their cars and left the bar............
had one guy drive into a dump truck
, then jump out and want to fight the driver for getting in his way, which happened be be inside the cones and across the ditch line, where the pavement had just been removed.

Hi Msky, ice cream for brekie can't be beat!!!

YG is the personification of my hero Zorba. We are all so fortunate to have this gentle giant among us. We joke about safety 3rd etc, but this man does what so many of us can only dream of doing. He lives my signature line by Eric Fromm and he does let go of certainty to achieve creativity in every dimension of his life. May not always work out the way he wants, but, by gar, he is creative and so very alive! Can't wait to see you in the dust (or mud) in another week and a half!

A toast to YGMIR the Unabashed Nordic Pagan.

Indeed, marty. He's got my respect as well. I hope to meet him for the first time on-playa this year. I'll even bring out the top-shelf tequila.

I hope to meet as many of you that decide to say hello at the Black Rock Beacon as possible. It's at 1:00 inner ring road (around Center Camp).

Sounds like a full depth replacement to replace the dowel bars between pavement sections.

Inside the CONES?

Cones are an excuse for vehicular assholes to attempt giant slalom in a work zone. I much prefer the concrete segments known as "jersey barriers'

One of the worst possible jobs to do on the highway is mudjacking, also known as 'undersealing' to the beloved engineers. You drill holes in the pavement and mix a lime and cement concrete grout that gets pumped under the pavement in an attempt to level the pavement. Usually it's done at the 'bump at the end of the bridge', where settlement of the approach slab adjacent to a RIGID concrete structure has occurred. At bridge ends, there's nowhere to run, nowhere to jump over the shoulder. You might end up in a river or 30 feet below on pavement. I always have advocated the use of jersey barriers when mudjacking.

And utility installation? I've got the creds on that too. We did a 245 foot pipe ram of 42" steel pipe underneath I-70 in downtown St. Louis one cold week. Nine feet off a world record for that diameter of pipe.At least when you're doing a crossing you're not on the shoulder, you're back from it a bit.

We need to talk.

naw, we installed conduit runs for AT&T. multiple 4" conduits, like 6x6 or whatever. up to 12' deep, open trench. And that was right when (and just before) all the laws about shoring and stuff were in place. I'd be in the ditch, knocking knobs and scaling the walls with anything from a 30 to 90 lbs breaker (air). Sometimes, a whole chunk of wall would fall in. Almost every time, one of the surface guys would see it moving and yell or hit you with something, which meat "GTFO" fast.....I only got caught in one of those, buried up to my waist. and damn I was stuck. they had to dig me out.........and always a great time was running the air hammer down in a ditch, when the end would come off, and that thing would swing around like a snake/bullwhip, beating the hell out of you until either you got hold of it, or someone shut the air off above......always a good laugh for the guys looking down watching!! hahaah

One co worker was 8' down scaling with a hammer, and hit a 36" pressurized sewer main. Now, that was some fast runnin'........
