Safe ways to decorate your car

Post by spoka » Thu Aug 08, 2013 9:52 am

I'm thinking of using wet erase or glass chalk markers to decorate my car on the ride up. I'll be writing on the glass and the paint of the car. I'm afraid the week long exposure to the sun will burn the ink into the paint even if I use a Mr. Clean eraser or Windex.

Anybody have any experience decorating their car with markers or can offer any tips on how to decorate your car?

It takes no time at all for the car to grow a thick coat of playa dust. I like to use this subtle medium to create a work of art or post a wise message on the windows (not the paint). Add a little water and it will last all week!

I had success with blue painter's tape on the side of a box truck, but I applied it on-playa, after there a thin coat of dust had adhered. I didn't try it on windows.
When he lights his streetlamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one flower.
When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep.
That is a beautiful occupation.

In 2009, my co-pilot and I used blue painter's tape on the back of our rented van without misadventure, applying it to the back about 5 hours before we hit the playa. Your mileage may vary.

Needless to say, we were obeying the speed limit (mostly) and not carrying any contraband. The fancier your decorations or the dirtier your car, Spoka, the more attention you will attract if you do something ill-advised in front of law enforcement.

Alas, I don't have any info about how your desired media affects glass, but other people have ideas. This is just one example.

FWIW i have used one of those magic erasers on a wall and it took the paint right off.

My decorations on the first trip up each year with my flatbed are several hundred hung on gallows and crucified on crosses, Barbies™, I haul up for BDC.
you should see the kids, as they pass.....some mothers cover the childrens eyes, some cross themselves. It may have made a little girl or two cry.......others laugh, thumbs up.........

Hey everyone, thank-you for all your responses. To answer my own post, the solution we used for 2013 was to paint our vehicle with water-soluble paints pre-burn. After the burn, we used denatured alcohol and water to remove the paints which came off very easily. We plan to use the same method this year.

When I worked at the used car lot* we used white shoe polish in the foam tip bottle to write on the windows - it cleans right off.
