Two Burners looking for a roost

Post by katfireblade » Sat Aug 10, 2013 7:32 pm

My fiancee and I are meeting in person for the first time at the Burn. This will also be his very first time at BM.

We're wanting to join a camp, but I'm looking for kind of a chill one.

He and I both are more than willing to help out with chores, do bar shifts, or whatever needs doing, but to be totally honest we'd be a terrible fit for a camp with in depth projects or anything that required a ton of time spent in camp. And since this is his first Burn, I really want him to have as much free time to explore and experience it as possible. And I won't lie, I want to be with him. We've weathered three years and 8000 miles, so I'm thinking we've earned it.

We're ready and planning to be as self sufficient as possible, all we're really looking for is maybe to share some shade, we're hopeful for a shower, and a bunch of good people to relax with.

Also, if anyone knows of any camps with a number of Australians running around? He hasn't been able to hook up with local burners due to living in the boonies and not owning a car, but we'd love to try and meet some at the burn. Camping with them would be a bonus, but neither expected nor needed.

Thanks!

Wait... you're engaged to someone you've never met in person? Woah.

Holy fuck.
I'm gonna be a dick and just blurt it out: you two would be the worst possible strangers to invite into a camp!!
You'll obviously be extremely preoccupied with each other and even admit that you wouldn't be a good fit for a camp that expects you to do anything.
Also, obviously to the rest of the sane world, you are an extremely high drama risk.

You need to just set up your own camp. Like most burners!!

Having said that... I do hope everything works out in storybook fashion and it's great that you finally get to be together.
You're probably cool people. But the info we have to go on here isn't good new-camp-member resume stuff!

So that's what a "chill" camp is.

Totally agree.

Hope I'm wrong, but I don't see this ending well.

Wait, I want more details on this long-distance engagement! You've been dating for three years but have never met each other? That's wild! Best of luck!

That's not so uncommon in this age of the internets. :)

True. But most save the engagement until after they've met.

There are still a number of camps looking for members in this forum--send emails or PMs proactively (as you may have done; I can't tell) because their leadership is probably going to be too busy to reach out to individuals this late in the year. The larger and more expensive the camp, the more widely the duties will be distributed. Aim for large and established. You sound like you wouldn't do well in a small camp in which every single member and their skills are critical to daily functioning. (It's good that you're honest about it, frankly!)

Btw, I don't actually recommend you highlight the fact that you've never met your fiancée when you seek out your camp. I'm not saying hide it or lie about it, at all, but from a practical standpoint people are more likely to worry about the possibility of drama rather than vicariously enjoy the romance. ;)

Here's hoping it's all romance, though. Best of luck . . .

I have to say that, while I've heard of people becoming enamored of each other over the internet without having met in person, I've never ever heard of them getting engaged. Did he propose over Skype, or via IM? Did he send you the ring? Did he bend on one knee in the post office as he dropped the ring into the mailbox? If the sex isn't good, is that a deal-breaker? Are you sure that he's really George Clooney and hasn't just been wearing a really good mask on Skype? So many questions...

In all seriousness, I hope the romance works out well for you guys. :) Still, I can't deny that my mind is boggled by it all.

Harsh.

My bet is there is a lot more to this than posted.

Well, they didn't get engaged until after they met (he surprised her by calling from the greyhound station after he arrived) but she did leave her husband for him and they did get married and have a kid, and only then did she realize he was a creep. Last I heard, he was in jail for stalking her...
