I sent in my application to gift tamales even though I'm ideologically opposed to such things. But then again, I also have a drivers license even though I think that those are complete horseshit.

I don't want to make anyone sick, of course not, so as someone who has also been a chef and food handler for a good chunk of my adult life I will be taking the steps (necessary and un-necessary), washing my hands and sanitizing my tongs.

But I would like to point out that Burning Man, like other activities that many of us regularly engage in are potentially risky endeavors. All life is fucking risky for fucks sake, and if you're not OK with it then get yourself a nice big plastic bubble and stay in it. But even then, that HDPE plastic will likely cause cancer.

Driving. Flying in an airplane. Public transportation. Eating. Smoking. Drinking. Walking down the fucking street. Sex. Burning. Whatever. Risky fucking shit. I'm all for minimizing risks so that we can extend our time to take more risks, but is filling out a piece of paper and sending in $50 weeks before the event really gonna prevent a clear thinking person from forgetting to wash their hands and clean their tools in their moment of panic?

I think that training and education is often necessary, but bureaucratic bullshit isn't. Though the lines between are arbitrary.

Example of moral quandary: I went through the Carcass Wash once and ended up with a nasty ringworm infection on my foot a few days later and like food poisoning its pretty hard to prove that it actually came from the Carcass Wash but when I sat there looking at it and trying to think about what activities I had engaged in that would cause such a thing, the Wash was at the top of the list. Is it their fault for not using bleach water for the communal bathing ritual? Or is it mine that I made the decision to participate in a communal bathing ritual with a bunch of dirty weirdos who clearly hadn't had a real bath in days?

BINGO! Perfect example of another activity on the playa probably should be required to get a license from the health department.

Don't think I'm into licensing and regulating everything, I'm not. But you were the second person that has mentioned the Carcas Wash as a source of some sort of disease. There might be certain things that they could learn how to do to prevent or at least lessen the chances of that happening. (Actually, a responsible camp should, in a perfect world, take steps to mitigate these things from happening without a license; but unfortunately it's not a perfect world.)

And you, being in the food service business might just take those precautions, license or no, but I can just say personally speaking, when we applied for the license the first time, we learned a lot of things we didn't know or consider. Now, not only do we make sure we do this while serving to the public, but we have incorporated most of those safety procedures in our personal kitchen on the playa as well.

It was a positive learning experience and is well worth the cost of the license.

Today, August 16, 2013, is the deadline for applications for 2013 BM.

I was talking with Winnemucca today. Along with warning me about today is the deadline, she said that there should be someone at Playa Info available to field questions about the permitting requirements, so camps can prepare for what camps want to do next year. They don't want to shut things down, they want things to be safe.

My burning man 2023 experience:

My tent permit wasn't approved in time for the burn, so I'm looking to join an orphan camp. All of the pnp camps are out of my price range unfortunately. 2 of my 8 costumes passed the inspection process this year, I'm super stoked to have choices this go around! I can only stay for 2 days of course, I wasn't able to obtain the certificate of food safety in time to be able to prepare my own meals so if I eat a lot before I should be able to survive for 2 days without eating. Last year someone tried to sneak me a snickers bar, but they were arrested and sentenced to 10 years. No idea why the McDonalds at 7:30 & G is so freaking expensive.

I sold food out on the Playa for a different event last month. Getting the Nevada temporary food permit was easy. The requirements are pretty lenient compared to what I have seen in other states and cities. My total cost for permit and stuff to comply was maybe $80. I didn't get inspected probably because it would have taken an inspector between 4 and 8 hours to make the round trip from Winnemucca depending if they chose to take Jungo road. (They will take it sometimes they said.) You will get inspected at BM.

It is too late to get a food permit for this year, but if you want to give away food next year the permitting process is pretty easy.
