Ride from Reno to BRC taken care of, as well as accomodations in Reno. Its such a relief having those out of the way.

Company is gone. Now I can start rearranging and packing the boxes. The company was interesting. My brother, his wife and her sister - who is a "sister". Strange to have this little 4' 11" person in a habit in the house. She almost reminded me of Cousin Itt in the Munsters.
You know it's going to be a bad day when you jump out of bed and miss the floor.

Boy, I'm trying to imagine the order that would cloister Cousin Itt.

Lucky duck! That's really the only thing I need to do/being a problem, right now.
I need a ride into BRC on Friday, 8/23, from Reno.
I might have found one, but they aren't getting in until late, and I want to suck every last meager drop of EA blood out of that pass...!
Re: One Item for BM a Day
New boots nicely broken in, just in time! Almost as light as sneakers, but still have a steel toe. I'm mostly excited about the side zipper, because tying dusty laces with playa-hands is horrible.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
On my list this year: boots with no zipper. They get stuck (even if you have oil). I've also had the problem of my boots not fitting, by the end of the week, and not wanting to zip up. I've lost...two or three pairs, to the playa, with zipper problems.
Re: One Item for BM a Day
I have high hopes for waxed zippers. Nothing else I had out there with zippers on it failed (pants, tent, duffle bags)....so I hope it works.C.f.M. wrote:On my list this year: boots with no zipper. Hooked up the truck to trailer lighting harness, it works.
Tom patched his bike tire her ran over glass with (don't drink and bike by the scuzzy apartment building kids)
Painted more of our banner and should have it totally done by Tuesday night.
Caught up in yard work around the apartment building so there is less for our vacation person to do.
Going to put screen blocker on the tent on Tuesday and finish my packing, not much else left to do.
We head out in 10 days!

A tip someone told me about zippers that I never knew was - pencils. Bring a pencil and sharpener and run the lead of the pencil all over the zipper. This is bound to be moopy so plan accordingly for the bits and shavings. Keep sharpening the pencil and running it on the zipper all over. Apparently the lead helps keep it from getting stuck. *shrug* maybe worth a try for a pair of boots you really want to keep for the playa.
I bought some boots for this year with a ties. Not sure if I will be regret it, but I hope not. I like my cowboy boots! they slip on - No Ties, No Zipper!

It is Cousin Itt, though, so if you're going to try and shame someone for not knowing their horror-y vintage TV shows, at least spell it right.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Last year when I had another zipper fail, I took the boot to Blackrock Hardware (it was tangled and caught up in the teeth). They totally fixed it.
By punching holes up and down the side, with some fancy machine, and using some plastic rope stuff to tie it up, a la corset-y. That place is RAD. I'd break something else just to have an excuse to go back and hang out.

I just had my brain put in the right show, so I didn't notice until now.
Graphite is a lubricant. And you can buy pencil sharpeners that catch the shavings. I don't suggest going with an electric. Although, turning on your gennie for that does have a certain morbid appeal...danibel wrote:A tip someone told me about zippers that I never knew was - pencils. Ah yes! You can buy straight sticks of graphite from the art store too. That might be better than pencils and sharpenerstheCryptofishist wrote:

Carpenters pencils work the best for zippers..Cheaper and don't make a mess all over the place.

Hm, maybe I'll try graphite, then, instead of sewing machine oil - though when it jumps the track, like last year, not much helping that.
I just got my ride in, so that's my one HUGE item for the day! And I can shop at a WalMart in Reno, so I don't need to fly with heavy stuff like batteries! Eplaya is a magical, magical place full of Burning Man fairies and elves who make dreams come true, gosh darn it.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Took the truck into the mechanic and got the following news -
Brakes checked. One return spring broken and was replaced. Otherwise brakes look good.
Radiator flushed and new coolant added.
Differential and transmission oil changed.
Oil change with new oil filter
Air filter changed. Asked for a spare for after the playa
Topped up the windshield wiper fluid and wiper blades replaced.
Checked all the lights including the brake lights
Replaced the timing belt (had never been done before) and due at 80K miles
Replaced the serpentine belt and pullys.
General tune up and spark plugs replaced - compression checked out OK.
New sensor (air temperature) to make the check engine light go out.
Battery checked and OK - New at the beginning of 2013 anyway.
Tires are OK
Gas gauge is still fucked - reads perpetually at empty but I have a gallons burned vs. miles driven log book system that works.
Confidence in the truck is now restored.
Continued to work on the dry ice chest - this has turned into a 12 cubic foot behemoth capable of storing a very large amount of ice cream, frozen food to be reheated for the meet and greets, and a large amount of ice. I will stock it with about 100 pounds of dry ice and the engineer in me tells me it should last for the 11 days.
Details details details....

The next morning you will wake up pretty much your old self except that a very unusual 16 hours will have been added to your store of life experience.
Re: One Item for BM a Day
Sew. Sew, darn it. Sew stuff and clean out all the project piles and pull out the winter clothes and start packing. I recently got rid of most everything I owned, to move, and don't have a whole heck of a lot left to wear. Yes, Yggie, I know, I know. "...and the problem there is...?"
And pick out some goggles.

Re: One Item for BM a Day
Don't like cold eggs for breakfast.. So I made a steam tray.. With a four cup SS bowl that is also the dishpan.. Put in two cup water and heat.. My plate fits on top of the bowl.. Then a ss lid over the plate.. This keeps the food warm whine fixing the spuds and pancakes.. Then reheat the water+ in the bowl to wash dishes.. Cheese egg omelet, pancakes x 3, potato shreds and 1/4 lb. meat sub.. Now I'm ready for the playa.. OH!, all of this is from rehydrated stock..
