Aw, thanks! I have to start posting all over to make up for missing the last coupla years, and then sit on a throne during the MnG so the masses can bring their fealties. And steak and champagne.

Does playa mud pack up real bad? Like, I'm used to traipsing about in my rain boots, in the muddy mountains of Asheville, but the mud doesn't really stick to the bottom of my shoes. Maybe it'll all be clear and dry in two weeks.

Playa mud packs thicker and sticks harder than any other mud I've ever encountered.

When I was in Kenya, the mud accumulated on our shoes and was measurable. My sandals turned into platforms. I hadn't seen anything like it.

If it rains on the playa this year, you will be reunited with platform sandals. Unless you sit in the shade drinking and catcalling at the people walking around in it, which is what I'm fond of doing.

Jackrabbit Speaks wrote:THE WEATHER

First off, weather happens on playa. It's quite unpredictable, in fact. It's hot. It's cold. Last week it rained ... like crazy. And when it rains on playa, it gets super muddy and slippery. However, once the rains stop, it dries out rather quickly (which it did, thankfully).

It's unlikely it'll rain during the event, but you never do know. Really, you don't. So come prepared for anything. (And the best thing to do if it rains is to STAY PUT, don't drive your vehicle, don't ride your bike, listen to BMIR for updates and wait it out.)

If you'd like to know what's happening on playa RIGHT NOW, check out our Black Rock City weather station ... data uploads every 5 minutes. Enjoy!

Latest update I just got is still cloudy and stormy...the packer in me is so confused. To wellie or not to wellie? No way I can fit an umbrella. Do I need the crazy cold weather stuff? One year I need the wool coat and fur hat, next year I never layer on more than a hoodie. The desert is trying to kill you, in more ways than one.

Get a few cheap dollar store umbrellas. They're a dollar! 8)
Bring layers of clothing. If it gets hot out, you can strip down. Be creative!

It'll be acid rain, and when it hits the alkaline playa it'll be the world's largest science fair volcano.

Everything on the playa is an amazing adventure. If it's hot and dusty, we are all enjoying it together. If it rains, we can all share and have a blast.

My regionals are all notorious for rain, I don't mind it. But, it's the mountains of Georgia and North Carolina, not the desert! Not so pleasant for people stuck at the gate if it closes (like I was for 7 hours in 2010!!) or the people working.

When it rains there, is it like...an all day rain? Bursts of intense 20-minute afternoon showers (like we get here in the South near-daily, during summertime)? Who the hell knows it's the playa shut up and just deal with it? 8)
