propane stoves in campers

Post by tatonka » Wed Aug 14, 2013 4:01 pm

Never had a camper until now , got the free camper and found propane tank in it was full. Stove and oventops work so good to go . Was wondering
tho how long does the average tank of propane last? We will be useing it to everyday 2 -3 times a day .

im not a great judge of this for the average meal for a small RV style camp/group

but when running a kitchen where we only cooked 1 meal a day on big outdoor style 2 burner stoves, for a large (well over 100) group (meaning it took us a while to cook and we used it a lot, possibly equalling 3 long-time-to-cook regular meals) we had to refill/replace at least once, and sometimes twice during the event.

with that experience..and none other when it comes to running a personal kitchen off of propane for a week... and wanting to be sure i had enough fuel ..i would probably bring 2 tanks if i was planning on running a propane stove 3 meals a day for the entire event

You'll have plenty! I run my hot water heater, furnace at night, and stove in BRC and though I have two tanks I've never used up the first.
Cook away! And invite me over when you do!!

Just for fun, I recommend a CO2 alarm for all RV's and Trailers. Make sure yours is working!

You think it's fun. But it's not fun when I'm woken up at six am at the burn. Not fun at all.

no markings , the tank is in a hatch ,which you open from outside . It looks like 3 gal of water would fit in it.

I would be suprised if you cook enough to empty it.

Most people just don't eat that regularly at the burn.

Plus you will be out and about a lot.

I bring a stove, but I've yet to light it, and I eat everything I want. 8)

Probably means a CO (carbon monoxide) alarm.
And you can get a propane alarm.
And you can get an oxygen depletion alarm.
  • When you're not using the LP, shut it off at the tank, just because.
  • Don't use the stove as a heater while you sleep!
  • The CO alarm is a must if you're running a propane furnace, fridge/freezer or hot water tank; propane alarm is a good idea.

Thought I should get that info out for others, so they don't kill themselves or others with CO.

I get ~12-16 days on a 7 gallon tank. It sounds like you have a 5.
If you're going to use it, turn on the water heater for an hour or two in the morning and then shut it off.
Don't run the furnace. It uses LOTS of battery as well as propane.
The fridge is the mission critical item. It uses propane all week long.

I'm an expert at eating Blueberry Muffins.
The real kind, made from scratch, with real wild blueberries that you fought a bear for.

Don't waste the propane with the oven. Just throw the muffin pan on the front dash.
