Yurt Doors -- Reinforced or Not????

Post by justinw » Wed Aug 14, 2013 2:55 pm

For those of you who have burned with a yurt before, how necessary would you rate the reinforced door designs? We were planning to just use a tape hinge and velcro, and possibly add wood reinforcement on the lip at the base of the door. I'm not convinced any of the reinforcements are necessary, but obviously haven't spent a week on the playa going in and out...

Thanks all...

We've done yurts for several years and have never reinforced the doors on any of them. Have never had one break and one of the yurts has made four trips to the playa and is ready for the fifth. Our doors are cut to leave 6" at the top and they go all the way down to the bottom. (i.e. the height of the doors are 3' 6" on 4' high walls and 5' 6" on 6' walls.

your suggestion then is to not have a little bottom "kick" panel to keep the wall's structural integrity? building my first 6'.

The little kick panel would become the trip panel...
And a pain in the ass. Its really not needed

great, I had read about reinforcing the "trip" panel but I'm running out of time and don't really want to go into that.
