Bad one item for today, the plane ticket I bookmarked jumped almost $200 in price, overnight. I'd put off buying it to let my brain settle down on "You can't spend that much money all at once/buy it! buy it!" and I screwed myself.

It's all down to my 25 year old one-ton GMC getting 22,000 pounds of itself, the camper, the trailer, and the boat - plus fuel, water, tools, shade, etc. - 750 miles over lots of mountains.
This is the part that always makes me nervous. I've been over everything, motor is fresh, clutch is new, brakes new, all that. But it's a big shitload (2.4 metric shitloads) of stuff and the road ain't level!

My oil change cost me about $400. I ended up replacing front and rear brake pads along with a belt or two. It was worth it, just for the peace of mind!

If you go look at a light too often, they jack the price (they think demand is going up) (even if you're not logged into the site). Tomorrow, before looking at that bookmark or that flight, clear your browser cookies, release your IP address, then: power down and recycle your modem, router and reboot your P.C.. Then go look at the flight, but don't use the bookmark (can contain session i.d., getting you the jacked price), go in from scratch. If the price was raised for you, it could be reset. If the price was raised for everybody, no luck.
I had a flight out of Tampa jump to 325 from 159. Did the above and it appeared back at 159. Booked it fast.

I tried that - at least clearing the history , part. Maybe I will jump on my roommate's laptop...thanks for the encouragement!

Clearing the history isn't enough. They have your I.P address and can pull up your last sessions. You have to release your IP address and have it get you a new one. Sometimes, your ISP will give you the same IP address. Check to make sure your ip address has changed. Make sure you clear cookies & super cookies as part of clearing history. Roommate's laptop's IP address may be too close and considered as related to yours. You may have to do the whole IP address release thing.
And wait until tomorrow. The more checks to that flight, and from a geographical area (as determined by all IP addresses check that flight), then the price can get bumped for everyone.

I remember reading here that you shouldn't pulse your brakes as you go down a long grade. Keeping them steady is supposed to be the least net heat and better for keeping the brake surfaces doing the best they can.
Hope someone here can explain that better.

I learned how to release my IP tonight! No idea what it means, or what it's for, but I did it! Followed all the advice, no luck. Even called the airline to try and plead with someone, but all she kept saying was "prices are subject to change."

Last night, trivia teammate works for a company that wrote the software airlines use, to change their prices. There's people who get paid to sit around all day just changing prices. It's called "massaging."

Packed my clothes tonight, have to wash a few things then pack those ass well, this theme camp has taken so much from Tom and I along with money too, that I really don't have jack for "costumes" this year, kinda.. Ok really bummed about this.

Bought on iTunes "spark: a burning man story"it is really good, I highly recommend it.

Went threw the house and picked up odds and ends and threw them in a bag (cameras, post cards, soap, ect)

Going to try to get the last two things I have sewn in the morning and the banner finished. After that I'm pretty good to go. Tom on the other hand...all his crap is sitting in a pile and Stewn around the apartment.

Sunday and Tuesday to do:color hair, nails, pumice stone for our feet, clean out the truck. Then hit the road Thursday.

Since the last time it went to BRC I put in a '98 Vortec 454, which seemed a straight forward swap for the old 454, but I could go on for a page or two about the issues involved. My other old crew cab dually I used to take to BRC has a Cadillac 500 that was easier to do than the later Chevy was!

Well there's a few things; if you are off the brakes then on them, you are repeatedly building up more momentum that you have to overcome again. Also I've heard it said that keeping the shoes and drums in contact controls their temperature better but I'm not so sure about that. The steady brake application thing applies a lot more to big trucks because they have air brakes, and every time you apply and release them you blow out lots of air. If you keep doing that you'll run out of air pressure faster than the compressor makes it - and then things get exciting.

The best thing to do is NOT ride the brakes down mountain passes. I shift down and go slow, staying off the brakes, saving them for any "oh shit" that might come up. Going slow isn't fun but on the way to BRC, the most important thing is actually arriving and NOT having a breakdown that costs you your only shot at being in BRC that year!

I also recommend NOT flooring the gas up those big hills either. Shift down, stay around half throttle and ease on up. You really really don't want to overstress or overheat yourself and not make it. Just don't go so slow that you don't get enough airflow to keep the radiator happy. Turn OFF the A/C going up hills (it puts a lot of extra heat into your radiator and you don't want that!) and if temp is getting iffy, I know it sucks but turn your heater on full blast - all that heat is coming out of your cooling system and it can make the difference between making it and not making it.

One more thing - next time you buy a truck with the idea of hauling your Burning Man stuff, don't get an automatic. Get a stick. Automatics generate a ton of heat going up hills under a heavy load. And don't get a wimpy 1/2 ton, get at least a 3/4 ton, preferably a one-ton. 4 wheel drive is good too - for the Burning Man trip it's not that you need the 4WD itself, but 4WD trucks have low-range gears you can use to get going on a steep hill under a huge load.

I want a truck! My last was a 1977 20R Toyota, and I remember driving with the heat on in the summer on road trips, it had overheating issues. I drove it until 2001. I think next year I'll have a truck. I'm off to the battery store now to look at deep cycle batteries for camp power.
