Help Question on Photo ID

Post by lordpyro » Fri Aug 16, 2013 5:59 pm

Hi

My cousin lost his photo id a couple of days ago and I am not sure he could get it in time.

He already has his Burning Man ticket in hand. Is it possible that there will be a problem
getting in? He has other id such as a birth certificate, current tax form and of course, I
can vouch for him and I have a photo id...

Thanks! I couldn't find that specific answer anywhere.

If he looks under 21 he might have trouble getting served at any bar.

If he has a talk with law enforcement photo ID would help a lot.

Truthfully, he will not need his ID to enter Burning Man after the gate opens with a physical ticket. (If the ticket was at Will Call, no chance without photo ID.)

Hope that helped

There is no photo ID required to get into BRC if you have a hard ticket. I'm not sure how old your cousin is, but if he's very young, he will need a guardian with him. That is the only issue as far as entering the dusty gates. If he's at least 21, he will need to show it to get an alcoholic drink at any bar. Lastly, if you're flying in, you'll need an ID to board a plane.
I hope this info is helpful.

Let me edit to add, as a rule, people should keep some sort of identification on their person in case of accident. You will still receive proper attention, but they should know who the next of kin is, and where they should mail the pieces. A camp location, your default name and your playa name would also be helpful.

not get it in time?

i just got got a new id a few days ago.. as ive done so for a few burns in the past (always seems to end up in the mid august to do list)

every time ive got a new ID it just takes a few hours at most...

i bring birth certificate, social security card, proof of residence (piece of mail, bills, or printed out online bank statement with current address) and have had no problem.

i dont see how it would be a thing that couldnt be done in time.

even if i didnt 'need' id to get in to the event i wouldnt feel right going around without at least some way to identify myself.. if not just for the above: to identify me if im not conscious or ..dead

..or if i get arrested.

Also, drivers licenses or state id's are a same day procedure these day. Be there 15 minutes before the DMV opens and you can be out in under 10 minutes.

Depending on what state your in, he might be issued a temporary paper ID with photo. While this is not sufficient, to get drinks at any of the bars (per Washoe County Sheriffs), it will be useful if you encounter them (Washoe County Sheriffs). I would get on it REAL QUICK! Some states are pretty good at delivering the hard copies within a couple days.

In California they mail them. It took exactly 8 days for my son to get his actual ID in the mail.

In Oregon you used to get your license the same day. I had gone in last October to get a new license, they have changed the policy and now you get a temp. It took a week or two to get the new one. I liked it better when we got the license the same day.

It took 2 weeks for my CA state ID to arrive last summer - and if I hadn't made an appointment for my DMV visit, it would have taken me 6ish hours of waiting (if I was lucky). With the appointment I only had to wait a month until they had an opening, but then I breezed right through. (I also live in a major city with exactly one DMV office within city limits, and it's only open 4 days a week due to the state budget)

The OP doesn't say where they're at, but to assume that they can get an ID "no problem" because it's easy for you to get one is like assuming... hell, anything. It's made up of false variables based on your situation, not theirs. Even in CA the experience I have is going to be way different than the experience of someone in a more suburban or rural area. I know that I'd be screwed if I lost my ID now - there's no way I could get one before I leave next Friday, even assuming I had an entire day free to sit at the DMV, so I can sympathize with the OP.

Like everyone has said, unless your cousin is under 18, there won't be a problem at the Gate. The only problem will be at bars, and then only if he looks younger than his mid-30s. If he's legal, yet on the young side (early-mid 20s), he might want to stock up on booze in camp, because he's going to have difficulty getting served.

i looked it up.

apparently 20 states now mail out ID's

and some even require finger printing/thumb printing !

crazy stuff, never had heard of anything like either of those things, things ive seen had seen so normal and regular that it woulda never crossed my mind that some people need to wait 60 days to get something mailed to them..

Fucking CA DMV didn't mail my registration sticker. I called on Monday, after getting two tickets in two days.
Upshot: Whooopsie--we forgot to send it...

I'm damn fucking lucky that crips don't need appointments. I was able to get one the next day. They wont be stopping me on the way to the burn.

in illinois you can get registration stickers for licenses at any Currency Exchange in just a few minutes..its not even an official govt place, just a place that can cash checks and do other stuff, many people get their checks cashed weekly at the joints (for a small fee like 3%) ... theres zillons of currency exchanges in chicagoland

they also let ya pay stuff like water bills and autoinsurance, a notary public, get new vehicle titles/registrations and transfers.. renew plates and get cashiers checks... even death certificates and tons of other stuff

they dont seem to have them in many states.. dunno why.. its a super awesome thing to have.

It is awesome. It's really hard to live in a cash economy. We must all be enslaved to the bank.

I wish it was a same day procedure. If you are lucky enough to live in NY it can take multiple weeks. It actually took me a month to get my replacement id. Order first week of July, got it last week. Woohoo

My sister in law got an expedited passport in a couple of days. As I recall it was pretty expensive and involved going to the central passport office (which there are only a few of scattered around the US, luckily she lives in LA where one is located) If you don't happen to live in one of these cities there are a number of services on the web which claim do be able to do this for you, (cant endorse, no direct knowledge)

But might be an option to look into if push comes to shove

I once used my will call letter to get my ID from the dmv.

A lot of this nonsense is voter repression.

In a city, we often drive to smaller towns for faster service.
I once drove 80 miles out and saved time.
