De-branding question!

Post by kyliediscope » Wed Aug 21, 2013 10:23 am

Thinking about what I have to contribute to the community-- I have decided on holding a wine tasting event for whomever stumbles by when I decide to do it. Wine is a passion of mine, so I think it would be fun to pour some delicious wines and talk about about why they taste like they do and where they come from. However, I wanted to ask about de-branding the wines. Would it be inappropriate to show the labels of the wines?

All of the wines that I am pouring are European, so the label lists the region in which the wines come from and the producers names as there are strict laws about what they can put on there. I view wine a lot like I view music or art, so to me personally I think it's giving them credit for something they made. I think just blacking out where the importer is listed would be okay, but I wanted to hear what other people thought as this is my first time at BM and I don't want to commit and faux pas.

Thanks in advance for your input.

All I can say is that at Barbie Death Camp & Wine Bistro when possible we leave the labels on so people know what we're inflicting upon them.

I would suggest leaving all of it on there.
You're not trying to sell or rep certain wines. You're just educating people about what different types of wine are/aren't.

I don't know jack shit about wine, or how to pick ones I like.
When someone gives me wine I like to be able to read the label so I know what I do and don't like for the future.

If someone gives you grief about it, tell them to go find a bar camp with an igloo cooler containing unknown cocktail and drink that.

It would make sense if you're also planning on taping over every logo on your car, watch, shoes, tent, phone, sunglasses, chapstick, soda/beer can, bicycle, LED light, screwdriver, condom, baby wipe, chip-bag, penis pump, etc. ... which I doubt.

Better to concentrate on more important things. It's not like you're hosting a Coke vs. Pepsi or a 7-Up vs. Chum tasting-competition as a marketing ploy

Anyway, if I were going to some tasting camp and enjoyed/reviled what I tasted, I'd want to know what brand it was.

Rumor has it that FIGJAM is working on Burner DIY penis pump that is unbranded.

He'll be changing his handle to FIBJAM.

Apologies to FIGJAM for bringing him into this tangential attempt at humor, lol.

if I enjoy a wine - id like to know what it is.

Personally for me, i would consider it a label and not branding. the diffrernce to me being that branding would be a logo or center product placement.

"This is a great red from the Yakima Valley from 2002 - a bit earthy, with a crisp finish" is a lot different than.

"This Chateau Steve Spence, a 2002 Red from Yakima and at 15.99 a bottle is a great deal" way different.

I would not worry about the labels personally, but theres plenty of others with different opinions.

Yup, leave the labels on for all of the above stated reasons.

Or make new labels. You know, "Roofie Zinfandel", "Unconscious Cabernet", "Tied up and Left Naked on the Playa Chardonnay", or what have you. Because, that's what I'd think the labels really were if I didn't see any. :)

Get a legal read on this. Some states will impose serious penalties if a label is altered or removed from a bottle.

Booze laws can get wierd.

Example: in some states, if someone is allergic to sulfites, and the bottle isnt labelled as containing sulfites, its on the bottler. If the label was defaced or removed, its on the person removing it. if its intact and displayed, its on the drinker.

And then there is the South where nothing makes sense and it all changes by county. :)

Glad to hear I won't be ruffling any feathers by leaving them on.

Fun fact: sulfites are naturally occurring in wine. It's a by-product of the yeasts metabolism during fermentation. Though wine naturally contains less sulfites than dried fruit. So unless you have problems eating dried fruit, you shouldn't worry about the sulfites the wine contains.

Those fake/funny labels could be fun too. Maybe put them on the back side of the bottle and leave that label facing front. Then when someone wants to actually see what they are drinking it's right there on the other side of the bottle.

No one at BM particularly LE is oing to enforce this law. If they do I will pay your fine and legal defense and eat crow..... Serve it to a minor and get caught is one thing, cover or remove a label from a bottle? bah...

Kinda like those labels on your pillows.

Let me know where you live and I can remove them before you get back from the playa.
