Branding
So, I saw some photos of people being branded with a lil Burning Man and I was wondering if anyone knows the people who perform this service. I am without and bodily markings (none done un-purpose at least) and this is just the kind of thing I would have saved this pastey white flesh for.
Lemme know whats up!

Worst. Idea. Ever.
Create a third degree burn in a dusty/dirty environment...that's not radically self expressive that's just radically stupid.

Re: Branding
I'll second that. But if you've got the band aids, you won't have a problem finding someone out there that can do the job. Good luck.Morrell wrote:Worst. Idea. Ever.

Re: Branding
There's a thread somewhere around here about what a horrible, horrible idea getting tattoo'd and other flesh-wounding things done is, at Burning Man. Just...stupid. I can't imagine anybody brands, at Burning Man. There's a brand camp that does cattle prod stamps, mind you, but branding? Never seen it. I can't help but think it might be shut down, if it was visible.

Re: Branding
It's out there. Haven't actually seen it on playa, but have seen pictures and heard stories of those that have had it done there. I think there are some eplayans that have had it done.

Huh. Well. If they're into one more physical hassle (trying to keep that thing/all things that touch it clean) to have to put up with, that's all them!jkisha wrote:It's out there. Re: Branding
I was just doing a quick search here and found threads where tattoogoddess and drawingablank both discuss getting branded last year, for two.

It's not a high horse, it's just all the stuff I've read about after-care, for branding! I went through a while, where I really wanted one. I can't imagine having an open, scarring wound on the playa. I can't even keep my healthy skin in good shape.lucky420 wrote:So yeah...until you've done it just hang on tight to that high horse of yours...

Re: Branding
Here is the thing, the alkali ph of the environment out there acts as a desiccant and can cause wounds to dry out instead of healing properly. If not taken care of you may end up with a muddled scar instead of that cool brand you were after. Wounds are taken seriously out there. I'm not saying branding can't be done sucessfully, just be aware of the additional risk.

I hate to sound like a know it all, but I seriously doubt it will be any less sanitary than most of the work I have done in the past. But thanks, 420. I will just have to keep my eyes and nose open for it while I am out there!

Silly choice of method. Freeze-brands are more durable, dont break the skin, and do not become easily infected. They are far less painful. Its why we have used these almost exclusively on livestock for more than 20 years.

Shhhh! You wern't supposed to tell them! But yeah, seems pretty obvious to me too. Go figure... but really, I am sure they were honestly concerned and not just chomping at the bit to tell someone they are an idiot.
rite?

Re: Branding
yes, get the logo owned by the LLC for their corporate branding on you forever
itll be like a coca cola tat.
but.. burning man.. and scar tissue.
(now THATs a high horse.... worrying about personal health/safety issues? not so much)
a few people in my camp have had it done.. some results look OK.. some look horrible and nothing like a 'man logo'
seems like a bad idea to me.
i want fewer injuries out there, not more.. and even without injuries, why would you want the LLCs logo on you?

I don't think that's filtered down to the branding community. Not a member, but this is the first I've heard of it.GreyCoyote wrote:Silly choice of method. duh, of course it hasntI don't think that's filtered down to the branding community.
because at least a few of the body mod community are just looking for socially acceptable forms of "im a cutter! i like the pain!"

Don't worry, I'll bring some Silvadene cream, gauze pads, and med tap we can put on our brands!
In a pinch covering a burn in vaseline then covering with a gauze pad can greatly reduce chance of infection too.

I'm not a fan of that type of -- what I consider -- body mutilation. If you're into that kind of thing consider having the mark (and its accompanying trademark symbol) somewhere on your body that isn't too prominent. It may not matter for some, but head-area tattoos, hand/lower-arm tattoos, tramp-stamps, or other noticeably visible indicators of markings can make you unemployable for certain jobs. Hell, you may end up paying to get them removed at some future date too.

Re: Branding
Sadly, I never found anyone doing actual branding this year as I am trying to get one for each burn. Brand Ur Ass camp is fun, but they use a rubber stamp, not a branding iron.
Before getting one last year I discussed it with an RN who said it is actually a perfect environment to get a brand. If I remember correctly I was told the highly alkaline dust inhibits bacterial growth and improves the scarring.
I ended up getting 2 brands. I put no antiseptic or bandages on them. They healed without complication.
They hurt way less (about 1 second of pain) and heal faster than a tattoo as well.
