Motorhome with CA Temporary Operating Permit

Post by javaguru » Thu Aug 22, 2013 11:44 am

I recently(1.5 weeks ago) purchased an out-of-state(CO) 1983 Toyota Sunrader Motorhome/RV in a pretty good condition(4cyl, 82k miles, runs well). I bought it from a guy that shipped it here(CA), but the original owner removed his license plates.
So I went to the DMV, paid my registration dues, got the red TEMPORARY OPERATING PERMIT good till October. In order to get the license plates, Ill need to have it pass smog, but since Im not sure if I will keep this RV past the BM, I don't want to deal with getting an older vehicle to pass.

Now since the permit is not as visible(Ive affixed it to the windshield, I don't have a window with good visibility in the back of RV) as a license plate to a car behind you, Im fully prepared to be pulled over on the way to BM and back and to show the proof. What concerns me is if I will get slapped with some sort of registration violation ticket and if I do, whether I have grounds to contest it.
Any advice would be appreciated

One post is enough. More constitutes spamming.

An assumption that someone has exhausted their searches before posting here is about as safe as an assumption that somebody took their medication before replying.
In other words, thanks for your help, but i did plenty of searches on operating vehicles with CA Temporary Operating Permits within Nevada and didnt find conclusive answers

Nothings going to happen, your legal with the temp permit. You should still place it on the rear of the coach though - laminate if you need too and tape it on if needed.

Ive rocked vehicles with expired tabs for years and some without plates at all - no one really gives a shit unless they are looking for your model rig. Of course i have gotten tickets for it, and this is horrible advice, but its free.

Thanks, I may need to go that route(lamination, etc), but I will have to be able to easily remove it and re-attach it. Like have it in the back while moving and have it in front when parked.
Its just that people getting tickets for broken license lights at BM is giving me jitters
